    NATIONAL LEAGUE

    Cardinals 5, Mets 3

Adam Wainwright threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and scored on Ryan Ludwick's tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning of St. Louis' victory over New York Sunday night.

Colby Rasmus snapped an 0-for-18 slump with a tying three-run homer in the fifth against the Mets, who dropped two of three and have lost four straight series to open the season for the first time since 1997. Ludwick hit the first pitch from Ryota Igarashi over the left field wall to score Wainwright, who had doubled off Pedro Feliciano with one out.

Tobi Stoner (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Buffalo earlier in the day, allowed a run on three hits in 2 1-3 innings. Angel Pagan had two hits and two RBIs.

    Braves 4, Rockies 3

Rookie Jason Heyward hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning, lifting Atlanta to a comeback win over Colorado.

The Braves rallied in the ninth off Rockies fill-in closer Franklin Morales (0-1), who loaded the bases by giving up a single and two walks.

    Dodgers 2, Giants 1

Manny Ramirez hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning for career homer No. 548.

Ramirez, who didn't start for the second straight day because of tightness in his right calf, drove a 1-2 pitch from right-hander Sergio Romo (0-1) into the left field pavilion with one out after Barry Zito walked pinch-hitter Garret Anderson.

    Marlins 2, Phillies 0

Nate Robertson outdueled Cole Hamels into the seventh inning and Dan Uggla drove in both runs with a homer and a double in Florida's second straight win over the Phillies.

Making his third start for Florida after being acquired in a trade from the Detroit Tigers before the end of spring training, Robertson (2-0) weaved in and out of trouble, striking out four and walking four in 6 1-3 innings. Florida took two out of three in Philadelphia.

    Pirates 5, Reds 3

Paul Maholm pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning, Jason Jaramillo had a three-run double and the Pirates completed a three-game sweep.

Jay Bruce hit his first two homers of the season, solo shots in the fifth off Maholm (1-1) and the ninth off Octavio Dotel, but the Reds lost their fifth in a row.

    Astros 3, Cubs 2

Pedro Feliz hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning after Geoff Blum tied it with an RBI double in the ninth as Houston rallied to beat the Cubs.

Tim Brydak (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as Houston won its first series since taking two out of three from Pittsburgh Sept. 11-13, 2009.

Jason Michaels led off the 10th inning with a leadoff double off Cubs reliever Sean Marshall (0-1). Michaels moved to third on Michael Bourn's sacrifice. After intentional walk to Jeff Keppinger, Feliz flied out to left-center to score Michaels. Michaels easily beat center fielder Marlon Byrd's throw.

    Brewers 11, Nationals 7

Craig Counsell's grand slam highlighted a 10-run first inning, and the Brewers held on for a victory over the Nationals, avoiding a three-game sweep.

A wild Jason Marquis (0-3, 20.52 ERA) was pulled before recording an out. He faced seven batters, and all reached base: four singles, two hit batters, one walk. Reliever Miguel Batista served up Counsell's first homer of the season.

    Padres 5, Diamondbacks 3

Chase Headley hit a go-ahead, two-run double with two outs in the seventh and the Padres rallied for five runs complete their first sweep of the season.

The Padres tied the game at 2 in the seventh thanks to the Hairston brothers. Scott Hairston greeted reliever Aaron Heilman (0-1) with a leadoff homer to left and older brother Jerry Jr. doubled over left fielder Conor Jackson's head to bring in Everth Cabrera, who singled with two outs and stole second.

    AMERICAN LEAGUE

    Royals 10, Twins 5

Alberto Callaspo had two home runs and a career-high six RBIs, and the Royals finally built a lead big enough for their struggling bullpen to preserve.

Josh Rupe struck out Jim Thome with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh to preserve a two-run lead, and reliever Jesse Crain served up Callaspo's second three-run homer of the game in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Carl Pavano (2-1) gave up seven runs on 11 hits in 3 1-3 innings against the team with the highest batting average in the American League. Luke Hochevar (2-0) gutted through six innings for the win, giving up three runs - two earned - on six hits.

    Indians 7, White Sox 4

Shin-Soo Choo hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, leading the Indians to their first three-game home sweep of the White Sox since May 2003.

Choo went 2 for 3 with a walk, hitting his second career slam in the second inning off Gavin Floyd (0-2). His first grand slam came against Boston's Josh Beckett on Aug. 3, 2006.

    Orioles 8, Athletics 3

Ty Wigginton homered and drove in four runs to help the Orioles snap a nine-game skid and spoil Brett Anderson's first outing since receiving a hefty new contract.

The Orioles avoided their first four-game sweep in Oakland since Aug. 23-26, 2004, jumping on Anderson (1-1) two days after the A's gave the pitcher a $12.5 million, four-year contract.

Brian Matusz (2-0), like Anderson a hard-throwing lefty, delivered a much-needed morale boost for the struggling Orioles in his first career outing against Oakland. He struck out eight, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk in 6 1-3 innings.

    Angels 3, Blue Jays 1

Ervin Santana came within one strike of a shutout and the Angeles completed a three-game sweep, making them 6-7 after opening the season with six losses in eight games.

Hideki Matsui had a pair of doubles and an RBI for Los Angeles, while Santana (1-2) set down 17 in a row before Adam Lind homered to right on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth.

Toronto left-hander Ricky Romero (1-1), who took a no-hitter into the eighth in his last start, allowed one run and five hits in eight innings.

    Tigers 4, Mariners 2

Young right-hander Max Scherzer pitched six solid innings, Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer into the second deck and the Tigers avoided a three-game sweep.

Scherzer (1-1), the Tigers' 25-year-old starter, gave up just a pair of runs and scattered six hits as the Tigers stopped Seattle's four-game win streak.

Cabrera gave Detroit an early lead, clubbing a three-run shot in the third off Seattle starter Ian Snell (0-2).
