Butler junior Shelvin Mack leaving for NBA draft

Butler University officials said Sunday that guard Shelvin Mack is keeping his name in the June 23 NBA draft and won't return for his senior season with the small Indiana school that reached the NCAA basketball final the last two seasons.

Mack confirmed his decision with The Indianapolis Star in a phone interview. He told the newspaper he decided Saturday night.

"I think it's a good time for me personally to go after my dreams," he said Sunday from Lexington, Ky., where he was home for Mother's Day.

Mack is Butler's all-time NCAA tournament scoring leader with 232 points in 13 games. The Bulldogs now face a significant rebuilding project with the departure of five seniors, including starters Matt Howard and Shawn Vanzant.

Butler fell to Connecticut in the April 4 title game in Houston, 53-41. The Bulldogs lost to Duke in the 2010 final.

Mack averaged 16.0 points and shot 35.4 percent on 3-pointers his junior season. He averaged 20.3 points during the 2011 NCAA tournament and was the Bulldogs' only scorer in double figures in the final with 13 points.
