East Lyme’s John McDonald was traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Boston Red Sox Saturday night along with cash for a minor league player.
McDonald, the former East Lyme High School and UConn-Avery Point standout, will be a backup infielder with Boston. The Phillies received pitcher Nefi Ogando in the deal.
McDonald will be eligible to make the postseason roster if the Red sox make the playoffs, as he was acquired a day before the Sept. 1 deadline.
McDonald, 38, has played in 45 games this season with the Pittsburgh Pirates (16), Cleveland Indians (8) and Phillies (21).
