Rajai Davis signs with Tigers for $10 million

Rajai Davis, the ex-New London High and UConn-Avery Point star, has signed a a two-year free agent deal with the Detroit Tigers for $10 million. The 33-year-old Davis spent the previous three seasons in Toronto and was second in the American League last season in stolen bases (45).

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. - Rajai Davis will be calling Detroit his new home for the next two seasons.

John Heyman of CBSSports.com reported late Tuesday night that Davis, the ex-New London High School and UConn-Avery Point Point star, has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the Tigers.

Attempts to reach Davis, who has a home in Waterford, were unsuccessful, but Roger Bidwell, his former coach at Avery Point, said, "That's good. I'm not totally surprised. I was with (assistant coaches) Gil Varjas and Ed Harvey on Monday and we were talking about him. And said to Gil, 'I think he can get two years with somebody and get 10 million.'

"That's what he got. That's a nice payday. These free agents are cleaning up this year."

Davis, 33, has played eight seasons in the major leagues, the last three with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he made $2.5 in 2013 and hit .260 with six home runs, 24 RBI and 45 steals (second in the American League behind Jacoby Ellsbury) in 331 at-bats. The right-handed hitting Davis would provide valuable depth, versatility and speed in the outfield for Detroit, where he could possibly platoon with Andy Dirks in left field and spell veterans Austin Jackson (center) and Torii Hunter (right).

Dirks, who bats left-handed, hit .256 last season.

"There are some clubs doing pretty darn well with platoons at different sports, too, so they do work at times," Tigers general manager Dave Dombroski told Jason Beck of MLB.com. "Just because it's not per se an All-Star somewhere doesn't mean that you can't get the production that you're looking to have out of certain spots. Sometimes they're more productive for you."

Dombrowski has said the Tigers, who stole only 35 bases as a team in 2013 - Davis stole 45 alone in Toronto - have made it a priority to add speed to their lineup in 2014. They began to reshape their lineup last month by trading power-hitting first baseman Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers for speedy second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Davis has stolen 268 bases in his career, which has also included stops in Pittsburgh (2006-07), San Francisco (2007-08) and Oakland (2008-10). He has stolen more than 40 bases in a season half of his eight major league seasons.

    He also hit .319 against left-handed pitching in 2013 with a .383 on-base percentage.
