Built in 1972, the four-bedroom Mid-Century Modern home at 41 Jericho Drive in Old Lyme is now offered to the market for $575,000. Coldwell Banker Realtor Martha Quaratella is the listing agent. She took time out to answer a few questions about the distinctive property.

“This unique mid-century deck house-style home is not the norm in this area,” Quaratella explained. In a region of the state replete with antique colonials and shingle-style homes, the Mid-Century architecture is a refreshing find.

“The vibe of this home is mid-century. It has an uncanny resemblance to the ‘Brady Bunch’ house,” a widely recognized home that just sold on September 11, 2023 for $3.2 million … just three days prior to this home being listed,” the listing agent noted. “The split-level design with the pitched roof, wood ceilings, sliding doors, and expansive windows brings the outside in.”

Throughout the 2,650-square-foot interiors, there are hardwood floors, high ceilings, and an abundance of windows and glass-paneled doors to maximize natural light.

Many of the original architectural and design elements have been preserved, with some interior updates. In keeping with the period and architectural theme, the builder incorporated veritable walls of glass, skylights, brick, slate, and hardwood floors, beams and ceilings. The living spaces have been laid out to flow seamlessly from one space to the next, and the abundance of windows breaks down the visual barriers between the home’s interiors and the lush landscaping outdoors.

“The kitchen flows beautifully into the generous dining area with the soaring brick wall as the focal point,” Quaratella said. “The counters are made of honed granite, and the peninsula provides a great space for pulling up a stool and keeping the cook company. The entry just off the dining area has a beautiful, large stone entrance.”

With bar seating for four, the eat-in kitchen also opens to a bright dining area, with exterior access out to the bluestone patio.

In addition to the living and dining rooms, the house has an expansive family room that opens out to a deck.

One of the four bedrooms is a primary suite, with a private bath. The three family or guest bedrooms share a full hall bath.

This property also affords the luxury of land, with 1.84 acres, partially wooded.

“The home sits in the middle of the lot, with the front having a generous open lawn, and the back having a more wooded feel with an elevated deck off the generous second-floor living room, while the main floor has sliders to the rear bluestone patio,” Quaratella said. “The backyard provides a private and peaceful retreat.

The Mid-Century design called for incorporating natural elements into the interior design, including hardwoods, glass and brick.

“There is room to open up more of the backyard, if desired, but for the past 50 years every steward of the home has enjoyed the peaceful setting,” she added. “There is a generous driveway, two sheds tucked to the right of the driveway, and even a built-in basketball hoop.”

The property is in the Lyme-Old Lyme public school district.

“This house has the best of both worlds,” Quaratella suggested. “The house is set back from the road, with a private, serene backyard and a well-established neighborhood, making it a perfect spot for catching up with neighbors, walking, walking the dog, learning to ride a bike, or exploring over 200 acres of the Lay-Allen Preserve with miles of hiking trails accessible from within the neighborhood.

The house is complemented by outdoor living and entertaining spaces, including a deck and a bluestone patio.

“Old Lyme is where the Connecticut River meets the Sound and has an abundance of natural resources, including extensive waterways, preserves and open spaces, beaches, art and history,” she continued. “This location is less than a mile to Rte. 1, for easy access to I-95 and area employers, such as Electric Boat, Pfizer and the area hospitals. It’s also just two hours to both New York City and Boston, with access to the Old Saybrook train station.”
