    Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault related to a May 30 incident at a Texas bar. An Austin police spokeswoman says Benson was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Travis County jail where he posted bail and was released. An arrest affidavit says he punched an employee of a downtown bar after being kicked out for getting into an altercation with another patron. In 2008, Benson was arrested twice in a month on alcohol charges. While in college at the University of Texas, he pleaded no contest to a charge of criminal trespassing for forcing his way into an apartment to find a television he said was stolen from him.

    New York Giants rookie safety Chad Jones will be moved to a New York hospital after he was seriously injured in a car accident early Friday in New Orleans Jones is being transferred to Presbyterian Hospital on Tuesday for plastic surgery and additional orthopedic procedures. The two-sport star at LSU was drafted by the Giants in the third round this year. Jones underwent nearly eight hours of surgery for a broken left leg and ankle following a dawn wreck in which his SUV smashed into a pole, an accident that has put his career in jeopardy.

    Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon will have surgery today to repair a torn right Achilles' tendon and is expected to miss the season. Colon was injured while working out on his own at the Steelers practice complex on Monday. The Steelers haven't officially ruled Colon out for the season, but such an injury typically sidelines a player for at least nine months.

    Add Dirk Nowitzki to the bumper crop of talented free agents. A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Nowitzki has notified the Dallas Mavericks he is opting out of the final year and $21.5 million on his existing contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't planning to announce Nowitzki's decision.

    The Trail Blazers have waived forward Ryan Gomes, who was acquired by Portland via a draft day trade with Minnesota. Gomes, a five-year NBA veteran, averaged 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds last season with the Timberwolves. Portland picked up Gomes and Luke Babbitt, the 16th overall pick, from Minnesota in exchange for forward Martell Webster. The move helps take the Blazers below the luxury tax threshold.

    Two people familiar with the deal tell The Associated Press the New Jersey Nets have traded forward Yi Jianlian to the Washington Wizards, creating even more room as they head into free agency. The Wizards dealt forward Quinton Ross to the Nets, who also sent an undisclosed amount of cash to Washington. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet announced. The Nets freed up another $3 million of salary cap space with the deal Tuesday, leaving them about $30 million to spend once free agency opens on July 1.

    At 84 years old, Warren Gilman has this hole-in-one thing practically down to a science. The Maine retiree now has four in his golfing career. The latest came last week at Point Sebago in Casco. Gilman says the thrill never gets old, though he missed seeing the ball go into the hole. He was informed by one of his golfing buddies. Joel Marquis, who was in the same foursome, told the Portland Press Herald that Gilman didn't believe it until he looked in the hole. Gilman didn't get start playing golf until his 30s. Now he plays every Monday through Friday, walking the 18 holes with a cart.
