    Local roundup: Final four set at 96th Norwich Invite golf tournament

    Norwich ― Dave Marshall worked overtime to keep his title hopes alive at the 96th Norwich Invitational.

    The reigning champion, the No. 2 seed, needed 19 holes to defeat 10th-seeded Jonah Dupuis in the match play quarterfinals of the championship flight Saturday at the Norwich Golf Course.

    Marshall, who beat No. 15 Mark Prosnick 5 & 4 in Saturday’s opening round, will play No. 3 Austin Cilley in Sunday’s semifinals at 9:01 a.m. Cilley eliminated No. 6 Tony Susi in the quarterfinals, 2 & 1.

    The other semifinal will feature No. 9 Nick Harrington against No. 12 Robert Tedoldi at 8:54 a.m. Harrington defeated Brett Shulick 3 & 2 in the quarterfinals while Tedoldi took care of No. 4 Aaron Vargas 2 & 1.

    Sunday morning’s semifinal winners will play for the championship at 2:15 p.m.

    Semifinals and championship matches in the other six flights will also be contested on Sunday.

    State American Legion

    • Aiden Whitten allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings as top-seeded Waterford defeated No. 4 Enfield 8-0 in the opening round of the Connecticut American Legion Northeast Bracket (Pod C) tournament.

    Whitten walked only one and struck out eight for Waterford (22-3), which will host No. 2 Bristol on Sunday at Waterford High School in a winners’ bracket game of the double-elimination bracket at 1 p.m. Bristol beat No. 3 Northeast 6-0.

    Ken Miller hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Waterford while Sean Salvador, Conner Rowe, Jack Lathrop and Preston Tabor added two hits apiece.

    • In Pod B, third-seeded Norwich lost its opener to No. 2 Ellington 5-3. Norwich (14-11) will host No. 4 NCL/Windsor Locks in the losers’ bracket at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dickenman Field.
