    Local roundup: Waterford 15s advance to New England Babe Ruth semifinals

    Keene, N.H. ― Waterford staged a pair of late rallies to defeat Pittsfield (Mass.) 3-2 in nine innings and advance to the semifinals of the New England Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament on Monday at Keene State College.

    Trailing 2-0 in their final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, Mason Nocery delivered a game-tying two-run triple to send the game into extra innings. Two innings later, Cooper Sheehan ended it with two outs and the bases loaded with a single to center for the dramatic walkoff victory.

    Quinn Speller was the winning pitcher for Waterford, which has won three straight since an opening day loss and will face unbeaten Lynn (Mass.) in Tuesday’s semifinals at 10 a.m. Host Keene will play Three Corners (Vt.) in the other semifinal game at 1 p.m., and the championship game will follow at 4.

    N.E. Babe Ruth (13) baseball

    • Waterford will play host Trumbull in the semifinals of the New England Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball tournament on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Waterford received a bye into the semis while Trumbull advanced with a 5-4 win over Quincy (Mass.) in the first round. Tri-County (Maine) will play Pittsfield (Mass.) in Tuesday’s other semifinal at 1 p.m. with the championship game scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m.

    State Legion baseball

    • Top-seeded Waterford will play No. 5 Stamford in the championship round of the Connecticut American Legion Bristol Super Regional on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Muzzy Field. Waterford is unbeaten in the double-elimination event while Stamford advanced out of the losers’ bracket with a 2-1 win over No. 8 Greenwich. Waterford beat Stamford 2-1 on Sunday. If Stamford wins, a deciding game for a berth in the state championship series at Palmer Field in Middletown will be played on Wednesday in Bristol, also at 6:30.

    Sun’s Thomas honored

    • Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, her second weekly honor this season and the sixth of her eight-year career. Thomas averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 7.3 assists during a 3-0 week for the Sun, including her first career triple and the first in Sun franchise history when she recorded 15 points,10 rebounds and 12 assists in a 94-84 win over the Minnesota Lynx on Friday.

    She had double-doubles in the other two games, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds in an 82-63 win over the New York Liberty of July 19 and 15 points and 10 rebounds in another win over the Lynx on Sunday night. The Sun (19-9) return to action Thursday night against the Seattle Storm at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.

    College football

    • UConn junior Jackson Mitchell has been named to the watch list for the 2022 Butkus Award, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate linebacker. Mitchell, who played at Ridgefield High School, started all 12 games for the Huskies in 2021. He led UConn in tackles (120), including 6.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception and two pass breakups. He ranked fourth nationally with 73 assisted tackles and11th nationally in tackles per-game (10.0).

    Women’s basketball

    • UConn will play Duke on Friday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 p.m., in the opening round of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament in Portland, Oregon. The game will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU. Iowa will play Oregon State in the other first-round game at 8 p.m., with the title game being played on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. on ABC and the third-place game at 10 p.m. on ESPN2. Duke is coached by former Connecticut Sun star Kara Lawson. The Huskies are 12-3 all-time against the Blue Devils, including a 72-59 win in their last meeting during the Sweet 16 of the 2018 NCAA tournament.
