    Around the region

    • UMass Dartmouth has a number of players with southeastern Connecticut connections on its football roster, including junior defensive Logan Chappell (Griswold), sophomore wide receiver Antonio Brown (Montville), fifth year linebacker Malik Gibson (NFA), freshman wide receiver Matt Castagiuolo (Stonington), junior linebacker Jaydon Lame (NFA), senior offensive lineman Liam Whaley (East Lyme), freshman offensive lineman Jameson Griffith (Stonington), freshman offensive lineman Colby Briggs (NFA) and sophomore wide receiver Mike Vincent (Waterford).

    In addition, senior wide receiver Winston Deleon attended St. Thomas More and sophomore offensive lineman Tyler Gmyr (Trinity Pawling) is from New London. Brown caught two touchdown passes and had five receptions overall in a season-opening 35-14 win over Husson on Sept. 3.

    • Also at UMass Dartmouth, women’s cross country runner Tori Schweitzer (Ledyard), a freshman, finished 10th in 23 minutes, 17.9 seconds at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational in Leominister, Mass., earlier this month.

    • At Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., freshman Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy) earned Northeast Conference women’s cross country rookie of the week honors last week. She finished 18th out of 64 runners at the Vermont Invitational, completing the 5K course in 19:20.5.

    • Also at Stonehill, freshman Thomas Forde (Fitch) and senior Andrew Janus (Bacon Academy) are running on the men’s cross country team while freshman Ryan Claffey (Bacon) is a goalie for the men’s soccer team.

    • For the third straight season, midfielder Katie Durkee (East Lyme) is a regular in the starting lineup for the University of New Haven field hockey team. A senior midfielder, she has started all three games this season.

    • At Springfield College, freshmen Meredith and Sarah Healy (East Lyme) are competing for the women’s soccer and field hockey teams, respectively. Meredith earned her first career start on Saturday against Western Connecticut. Sarah made collegiate debut Saturday at Roger Williams.

    • Also at Springfield, sophomore Helen Megson (Lyman Memorial) is a regular on the lineup for the volleyball team.

    • Sophomore forward/midfielder Kelsi Ursini (Fitch) scored a goal for the Saint Joseph women’s soccer team in a 3-2 win over Fitchburg State on Sept. 3.

    • Junior Dylan McGuire (NFA) helped the Eastern Connecticut men’s cross country team finish fifth overall at the Suffolk Short Course Classic at Franklin Park in Boston on Sept. 2. He crossed the line in 57th in 17 minutes, 29 seconds.

    • Also at Eastern, sophomore Michaela Ellis (Fitch) had an assist in the field hockey team’s 8-0 rout of Regis College on Sept. 3. Ellis has appeared in all three games, starting two.

    • Freshman Hannah Daniewicz (NFA) scored the Salve Regina women’s soccer team’s only goal and the first of her collegiate career in a 3-1 loss to Keene State on Saturday.

    • Senior setter Meg Verizzi (Lyman Memorial) leads the volleyball team in assists with 163 through seven games.

    • Sophomore defender Victoria Violette (Bacon Academy) has started six of Central Connecticut women’s soccer team’s first seven games.

    Jacob Rose (Montville), a sophomore defender, is a member of the nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut men’s soccer team. He’s played in all five games, starting four, for the No. 16 Owls (3-0-2).

    • Also at Southern, Aimee Girard (Waterford) is making an impact as freshman midfielder for the women’s soccer team. She’s appeared in all five games, starting four.

    • Junior defender/midfielder Tyler Fidrych (Stonington), a former all-state and all-New England high school player, appeared in his second career game for the UConn men’s soccer team, coming off the bench in a 5-0 loss to Syracuse on Sept. 5.

    • Sophomore Kaelen Fabry (NFA) is a backup goalie for the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team.

    Whale Cup match

    • Crosstown rivals Connecticut College and Coast Guard Academy will play the annual Whale Cup women’s soccer game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Camels (1-1), who will serve as hosts, have won 20 of 21 meetings in the series. The Bears (3-1) are off to a strong start, out-scoring opponents, 7-3, with five different players scoring goals.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • The Mitchell College men’s soccer team handed new coach coach Cam Pilger his first victory by beating Worcester State, 3-2, last Thursday. Pilger spent the previous four years in charge of the men’s program at the University of Saint Joseph.

    The Mariner roster includes senior goalie Joey Rosa (Stonington), freshman forward Snadooby Robert (New London), sophomore defender Dylan Lucey (Lyman Memorial), freshman defender Jeremy Gibbs (Waterford), senior forward Jack Varley (Montville), senior midfielder Nick Ghirardi (East Lyme), sophomore midfielder Matt Ladd (Griswold), freshman forward Flavio Alvarado (New London), senior defender Brandon Sirois (Lyman) and senior midfielder Walter Factor (Ledyard).

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Coast Guard Academy men’s soccer program has opened the season with three straight shutdout wins. Senior goalie John Vaaler has two shutouts and junior Max Pfleghar has one. The Bears will try to extend their streak on Tuesday at Salve Regina.

    • The Bears swept the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference weekly honors in football after posting a 22-16 win over Curry College on Saturday. Junior Logan Morris (five tackles, two interceptions) was named the defensive athlete of the week while senior place kicker/punter Finnegan Hall (40 yard field goal, 41.3 punt average) was selected as the top special teams athlete and senior running back Spencer McMillon (126 yards, two TDs) received offensive player honors.

    • Sophomore goalie Emily Scharnitzky earned league defensive athlete of the week honors for women’s soccer after allowing just two goals in three games and averaged 8.67 saves.

    Camel highlights

    • The Connecticut College men’s soccer team, the defending Division III national champions and preseason number one ranked program, hosts Bowdoin Saturday in its New England Small College Athletic Conference home opener. The Camels (1-0-1) tied nationally-ranked Tufts, 0-0, on Saturday in their league opener. The two teams last met in the NCAA Elite Eight, with Conn winning 5-4.

    The Camels will face plenty of tough challenges this season, as NESCAC foes Amherst (No. 2), Tufts (No. 6), Middlebury (No. 8) were all ranked in the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.
