Analysis: Coast Guard’s Spencer McMillion carried the ball 37 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 31-24 victory last week at MIT. Before that game, coming off a bye week, Coast Guard coach C.C. Grant said he was looking at the final three games as a three-game season in an attempt to climb to .500. The Bears took the first step toward that despite trailing 17-3 at halftime. “We looked like a team that had a week off,” Grant said, referring to the bye week. “We kind of slept-walked through (the first half). ... We met on Sunday and (offensive coordinator) JB (Wells) told me we only had three first downs in the first half. We ended up with 25 for the game. I didn’t realize it was that big a turnaround. The speed we play with, (MIT) might have gotten tired at the end.” ... McMillion continues to be listed at the top of the NEWMAC rushing leaderboard with 119.9 yards per game and 14 touchdowns, while quarterback Joey Armentrout is second with 225.3 yards passing per game. “The plays Spencer was getting 2-3 yards, in the second half he might have gotten 7-8 and then he went 40 yards untouched. It opened up the entire offense,” Grant said of McMillion’s role against MIT. “Hopefully he can continue it this week. We’re a different offense when he’s cooking. When the run game’s cooking, everything works. If you’re running the ball successfully, eventually they’re going to have to put an extra guy in the box to try to stop it.” ... Coast Guard plays its final home game of the season against WPI before hitting the road next week for the season finale at rival Merchant Marine. WPI is coming off a 20-15 win over Norwich, getting a 90-yard kick return in the victory from Ryan Hannigan. Linebacker Jack O’Connell forced a fumble recovered by defensive back Joey LeClerc to seal the win. Grant said WPI is physical on both lines — “they’re physical, which has kind of been their calling card,” Grant said. Added Grant: “On the offensive side, they do a lot of stuff. Last week, MIT had two groupings and probably four different formations. These guys have a bunch of groupings, probably five different groups, and a ton of formations.” ... Last season, WPI beat Coast Guard 38-6, finishing with 457 yards offense. Coast Guard turned the ball over three times in the loss, twice inside the WPI 5-yard-line.
