    Local roundup: Nine local players earn all-state honors in boys’ soccer

    Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament champion East Lyme had a pair of players named to the Connecticut Soccer Coaches’ Association Class L all-state team, which was announced on Wednesday.

    Senior midfielder Reid Dowling and senior goalkeeper Connor Piper were selected from the Vikings and were joined on the Class L team by Ledyard junior forward Peyton Luther.

    They were three of nine local players named to the various teams.

    In addition, Norwich Free Academy senior forward Rood Apolon was named to the Class LL team, Bacon Academy senior midfielder Nico Mateucci, Norwich Tech senior midfielder Zach Lamitie and Stonington senior defender Conrad Tobiassen made the Class M team, St. Bernard junior midfielder Jose Pacheco made the Class S team and Williams School junior midfielder Ben Xenelis was named to the Class S prep school team.

    Men’s basketball

    • Mitchell College won its eighth straight game with an 80-66 victory over Coast Guard Academy. New London’s Jalen Benson had a big game for the Mariners (8-1) with 24 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals while Alfonzo Stokes had 21 points and eight rebounds, Walter Causey 10 points and eight rebounds, and Waterford’s Mikey Buscetto nine points and 10 assists.

    The Bears (2-6) were led by Declan Rooney, who scored 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Jarrod Jackson added 10 points for Coast Guard while Abe Countryman had 10 rebounds and Cameron Brown finished with eight points, seven rebound, five steals and four assists.

    • Baruch College ended Connecticut College’s seven-game winning streak with a 77-66 victor over the Camels on Tuesday night in New York. Gerald Nicholson scored a game-high 21 points for Baruch (6-3), which shot 60 percent from the floor. Billy Whelan had 12 points and four assists for the Camels (7-2) while David Murray added 12 points, four assists, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Jarron Flynn finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • Jadiel Thomas had six points and five rebounds during the Williams School’s 54-20 season-opening loss against Forman School. Sam Kaplan added five points and two assists for the Blues.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Williams dropped it season opener with a 50-13 loss to Forman School. Lucy Fader led the Blues with six points while Amaya Butler added four.

    Women’s basketball

    • Westfield State outlasted Mitchell 86-82 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night. Sam McKenna led the Mariners (3-4) with 23 points while Amina Wiley posted her fourth-double-double of the season (21 points, 22 rebounds), Yasmine Santos also had a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Dede Stevenson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
