    Local roundup: Mitchell women roll again in Hat City tournament

    Danbury — Mitchell College completed its two-day dominance by defeating SUNY Delhi 101-30 on Saturday on the second day of Western Connecticut State University’s Hat City Tournament.

    The Mariners (5-7) defeated Fitchburg State 92-44 in Friday’s tournament opener.

    Senior Sam McKenna led Mitchell with 22 points and three steals while New London’s Jamya Beddoe made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, Dede Stevenson had 11 points and Jermia Davis contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and six steals.

    The Mariners also forced 38 turnovers while limiting the Broncos to just 22.4% shooting from the floor and holding a 59-38 rebounding edge.

    Men’s hockey

    • No. 10 UConn completed a two-game sweep of Long Island University with a 5-3 win at the XL Center. John Spetz had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (13-5-3) while Andrew Lucas and Hudson Schendor had two assists and goalie Logan Terness made 35 saves as LIU (6-13-1) held a 38-32 edge in shots.

    Women’s hockey

    • Goalie Megan Warrener made 15 saves to earn the shutout as UConn beat Brown 3-0 in Providence. Megan Woodworth had a goal and an assist for the No. 14 Huskies (13-8-2) while Kathryn Stockdale had two assists and Brianna Ware and Ainsley Svetek each scored a goal.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Griswold remained unbeaten with a 50-36 victory over Woodstock Academy on FRiday night. Christian Russell led the Wolverines (6-0) with 22 points while Lucas Strain added 11. Woodstock is 1-5.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Old Lyme’s Dylan Sheehan won the shot put to highlight the Wildcats’ productive day at the Relay Ruster Buster meet on Friday at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. Sheehan’s winning effort was 47 feet, 6.5 inches. In addition, the 4x400 relay team of Marco Supersano, Gabe Tooker, Simon Karpinski and Dylan Hovey placed seventh in 3:59.86.

    In the girls’ meet, Old Lyme had a pair of second-place finishes with the 4x400 relay team of Chase Gilbert, Beatrice Hunt, Aggie Hunt and Lyla Powers finishing in 4:28.28 and the sprint medley team of Zoe Eastman-Grossel, Bronwyn Kyle, Powers and Gilbert finishing in 4:31.68. Emma Bayor added a sixth in the shot put (27-7) and the 4x200 relay team of Serena Mazzi, Kyle, Beatrice Hunt and Eastman-Grossel placing 10th in 2:03.88.
