    Local colleges: Mitchell men reach 20-win plateau for first time in Division III era

    Medford, Mass. — Mitchell College reached 20 wins for the first time in the Division III era with a 115-69 victory over Lesley University in a New England Collegiate Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday.

    It was the 10th straight win, also a program first, for the Mariners (20-3, 5-0), who remained atop the NECC.

    Mitchell shot 65.7% from the floor and made 10 3-pointers. Alfonzo Stokes was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyound the arch and finished a season-high 34 points (he also had seven rebounds and four assists), while New London’s Jalen Benson had a pair of 3-pointers and finished just just of a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

    Wilton Causey added 14 points for Mitchell, which held a 49-18 rebounding edge, while Ahmani Brown had 11 points and Waterford’s Mikey Buscetto added eight assists, six rebounds and four steals.

    In other games:

    • Declan Rooney scored a game-high 23 points, but Coast Guard Academy came up short against WPI, losing 69-63 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. Cameron Brown added seven points and five rebounds for the Bears (4-18, 2-9).

    Women’s basketball

    • Mitchell remained unbeaten in NECC by defeatnig Lesley 103-60 for its fifth straight win. Yasmine Santos and Jermia Dumas scored 17 points apiece for the Mariners (14-9, 5-0), while freshman Kyrsten Lucas added a career-high 16 points (with four 3-pointers), Amina Wiley had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Dede Stevenson had 15 points, five assists and five steals, and Na’Jae White scored a season-high 14 points.

    • Coast Guard came up short at WPI, losing to the Engineers 64-54 in the NEWMAC. Dorothy Stotts led the Bears (12-11, 4-4) with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while Glory Blethen added 10 and Julia Mann had eight points and eight rebounds. WPI is 17-5, 7-2.

    Men’s hockey

    Damien Carfagna’s overtime goal lifted New Hampshire to a 3-2 Hockey East victory over UConn. Harrison Rees and Justin Pearson scored goals for the Huskies (17-10-3, 11-8-2).

    • Colchester’s Kellen Beauton made 17 saves in goal during Connecticut College’s 4-0 loss to Amherst in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. The Camels are 5-16, 2-13.

    Women’s hockey

    • Nancy Loh’s goal in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and lifts Hamilton to a 2-1 win over Conn College in the NESCAC, completing a weekend sweep. Melanie Conca, assisted by Caroline O’Keefe, scored on the power play in the first period for the Camels (12-9-1, 6-7-1) while goalie Abby Wieczorek made 23 saves.
