    Local roundup: Conn’s Finkel wins 500 free at NESCAC meet

    Middletown — Connecticut College’s Justin Finkel broke the school and meet record in capturing the 500-yard freestyle during Day 2 of the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s swimming and diving championship on Friday at Wesleyan University.

    Finkel finished in 4 minutes, 25.90 seconds for the Camels and became the first Conn swimmer to ever win a NESCAC title in the 500 free.

    Williams leads the team competition with 759.5 points and Conn is ninth with 311.

    In addition, Julien Legros finished fourth in the 50 free (20.31) and Kai Lisgarten was fifth in the 1-meter dive with 393.35 points.

    The Camels added a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with Sean Geisler, Finkel, Mitchell Lockwood and Legros forming the quartet.

    During Thursday’s first day of the meet Conn’s 800 freestyle relay team of Finkel, Tadeusz Trewik, Lockwood and Marc Stern finished third in 6:39.83 to earn All-NESCAC honors.

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • Yianni Baribeau had 38 points, 20 rebounds and six blocked shots as Killingly rolled to an 80-62 victory over Montville. Johnny Kazantzis added 23 points and Thomas Dreibholz 13 for Killingly (14-5) while Lebron Maurice scored 27 points for Montville (8-11), including the 1,000th of his career.

    • Travis Mangual scored a game-high 26 points and Malcolm Hunter added 16 with four 3-pointers as Windham scored 48 points in the second half and pulled away for an 85-63 win over Bacon Academy, Luke Grimord scored 19 points for the Bobcats (10-10) while Elijah Black added 10 and Jack Holmes made three 3-pointers for nine points.

    • Evan Merchant scored 15 points as Griswold defeated Wheeler 57-39 in a matchup of ECC divisional champions. Christian Russell added 14 and Jeff Souvenance 13 for the Wolverines (17-3), winners of Division III, while Deondre Bransford led the Division IV champion Lions (14-5) with 14 points.

    • Charlie Sahadi hit a late 3-pointer to put Old Lyme ahead for a good as the Wildcats beat Norwich Tech 60-57 in a non-conference game. Leland Hine went 9-for-10 from the field and scored 22 points for Old Lyme (6-13) as did Caden Monte. Josh Hanks scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Warriors (5-15) while Bradley Saint Louis had 15 points and Jack Gahrman 11.

    • Robbie Scavello had 20 points and eight assists as Stonington qualified for the Division III state tournament with a 62-57 win over Sport Sciences of Hartford. Luke Lowry added 17 points for the Bears (8-12) and Aaron Lopresto added 10.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Host Killingly holds a slim two-point lead over Windham after the first day of the Class S tournament. Killingly has 103 points and Windham, which won last week’s ECC tourney title, has 101. Both have six wrestlers in the semifinals, which will take place on Saturday at noon. New Fairfield is third with 90.5 and Haddam-Killingworth, the defending champion, is fourth with 90. Griswold/Wheeler is the top local team. The Wolverines are seventh with 61 points.

    • In othe other class meets, host Trumbull has 118 points to lead East Hartford (101) and Fairfield Warde (95.5) after Day 1 of the Class LL meet. Norwich Free Academy is ninth with 73 points. Xavier, the No. 1 team in the state, leads with Class L meet at Guilford with 140.5 points followed by New Milford with 120. And in the Class M meet at Jonathan Law in Milford, Berlin leads a tight team race with 109.5 points followed by RHAM (103), Avon (102.5) and Foran (101). New London is sixth with 68 points.

    H.S. hockey

    • Goalie Cam McCollum made 32 saves during the Eastern Connecticut Eagles’ 4-0 loss to Wethersfield. The Eagles are 5-10.

    Sun add Fields to roster

    • Nirra Fields, a 5-foot-9 guard out of UCLA, has signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun. Fields, a Vancouver native, played with the Canadian National team at the 2020 World Cup and has enjoyed great success playing overseas. Fields is currently playing overseas with Turkish club, Emlak Konut, where she is averaging 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
