    Big East women’s basketball tournament roundup

    No. 9 Georgetown 53, No. 8 Butler 46

    • Brianna Scott and Kennedy Fauntleroy each had key three-point plays in the fourth quarter as ninth-seeded Georgetown topped No. 8 seed Butler 53-46 in the opening game of the Big East women’s basketball tournament on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

    Jada Claude had 17 points and eight rebounds while Scott had five of her 11 points in the fourth quarter for the Hoyas (14-16), who who played top-seeded UConn in Saturday’s quarterfinals at noon.

    Butler’s Sydney Janes had eight of her 21 points in the fourth quarter. Janes hit a basket and had a chance for a three-point play to get the Bulldogs (11-19) within four points with 2:05 to play. The foul shot was no good and any chance Butler had to come all the way back ended with Fauntleroy had four points on consecutive possessions.

    No. 7 DePaul 67, No.10 Providence 54

    • Aneesah Morrow scored 24 of her 26 points in the first half as seventh-seeded DePaul defeated No. 10 seed Providence 67-54 in the first round .Morrow had seven points during a 16-0 run that turned a five-point DePaul lead into a 41-20 advantage late in the first half.

    Providence went almost five minutes without a basket before Grace Efosa hit a jumper with seven seconds left in the first half to make it a 41-22 game at halftime.

    Morrow outscored the Friars 24-20 in the first half. Morrow also had 15 rebounds. Anaya Peoples had 12 points, Kendall Holmes had 11 points and made two of the Blue Demons' seven three-pointers and Darrione Rogers finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

    Janai Crooms had 10 of her 16 points in the second half for Providence (13-18).

    DePaul (16-16) will face No. 2 Villanova in Saturday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

    No. 6 Seton Hall 84, No. 11 Xavier 58

    • Lauren Park-Lane had 19 of her 26 points in the first half to lead sixth-seeded Seton Hall to the 84-58 win over No. 11 Xavier in the first round.

    Park-Lane had 12 points in the first quarter, including the final five points to give the Pirates (18-13) a 10-point lead going into the second quarter.

    Back-to-back 3-pointers by Seton Hall’s Victoria Keenan to open the second quarter pushed the Pirates’ lead to 16. The Musketeers scored the next 10 points to make it a six-point game.

    Park-Lane scored and after Jala Jordan drained a 3-pointer, Amari Wright came up with a steal and that was quickly turned into a three-point play by Park-Lane. When Keenan hit her third 3-pointer in the quarter, Seton Hall was up by 17.

    Keenan hit six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points for the Pirates, who play No. 3 Creighton in Saturday’s quarterfinals, and Jala Jordan added 12.

    Courtney Prenger led Xavier (7-23) with 19 points.
