    Local roundup: Fitch’s Matthews captures New England wrestling championship at 220 pounds

    Providence — Fitch High School’s Naszier Matthews picked the perfect time to reach the top of the podium during the postseason.

    The senior, who had runner-up finishes at the Eastern Connecticut Conference, Class L and State Open wrestling tournaments, capped his career in the grandest of fashions on Saturday by winning the New England Championship at 220 pounds at the Providence Career and Technical Center.

    Matthews, who pulled off tight decisions earlier in the day — beating Logan Reiner of South Kingstown (R.I.) 5-2 in the quarterfinals and Nehemias Pettway of Fairfield Warde 1-0 with a third period escape in the semifinals — pinned Matt Harrold of Haverhill (Mass.) in 2 minutes, 53 seconds in the final.

    Matthews was one of four Connecticut champions, joining Killingly’s Jack Richardson (152), Xavier’s Raekwon Shabazz (106) and Norwalk’s Brendan Gilchrist (195) as gold medalists. Richardson, who won at 145 pounds in 2022, became the first Killingly wrestler to win back-to-back New England titles.

    Montville’s James Linder Jr. also reached the podium at 138 pounds. The junior, who won ECC and Class S state titles earlier in the postseason, finished fourth. He reached the semifinals before losing his first match of the tournament, battled back to reach the consolation final, but lost to Jayden D’Ambosio of St. John’s Prep (Mass.) 10-1.

    Killingly’s Kaden Ware (132) was the ECC’s other place-winner, finishing fourth.

    Ponaganset (R.I.), with seven place-winners, cruised to the team title with 143 points while Xavier was the top Connecticut finisher in fourth with 68.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Stonington senior Joshua Mooney captured the 55-meter hurdles title during the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Mooney won the race in 7.39 seconds, beating Michael Johnson of Lewis Mills, who finished in 7.48 seconds. Mooney also placed 21st in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 11.5 inches.

    East Lyme’s Thomas Matlock also earned All-New England honors with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (53-2.25). Also local finishers in the boys’ meet were Stonington’s Ryan Gruczka, who was eighth in the mile (4:21.54), Ledyard’s Jacob Lenz, who was 11th in the long jump (21-1), Old Lyme’s Dylan Sheehan, who was 11th in the shot put (50-9) and Ledyard’s 4x800 relay team of Hayden Baber, Auguste Estriplet, Gabe Huff and Mason Day, which placed 11th in 8:21.70.

    In the girls’ meet, Old Lyme freshman Chase Gilbert ended up with All-New England status in two events. She finished second in the two-mile race in 10:44.67, a personal record, then joined Maggie Morgado, Aggie Hunt and Olivia Powers to finish fourth in the 4x800 relay in 9:30.55, another PR.

    New London’s Darielys Arnold placed 11th in the long jump (16-11) while Norwich Free Academy’s Hannah Graham was ninth in the shot put (36-0.25) and East Lyme’s Sandra Kirvelevicius was 18th (33-3.25).

    H.S gymnastics

    • NFA freshman Trinity Ambruso won two individual events and played third in the all-around at the State Open championship meet at New Milford. Ambruso won the balance beam (9.6 points) and uneven bars (9.35) while tying for fifth on the vault (9.225) to finish with an all-around total of 38.275. Fairfield Warde’s Emma Johnson won the all-around with 37.75 points and Woodstock’s Olivia Aleman was second with 37.7. Hand won the team title with a 141.75 points.

    H.S. hockey

    • Maxx Corradi and Donnie Sousa scored two goals apiece as top-seeded Woodstock Academy pulled away in the third period for a 5-1 win over the No. 3 Eastern Connecticut Eagles in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference tournament final in Pomfret. Wade Larson scored a goal in the second period for the Eagles (7-14) that tied the game a 1-1.

    • The Eagles reached the final by avenging a pair of regular-season losses to Tri-Town with a 7-1 victory in the semifinals on Friday night. Drew Sager had a pair of goals for the Eagles while Declan York, Jack Cramer, Kadeen Casteel, Dakota Fox and Gavin Casagrande each scored once, Casagrande had two assists and Zack Pazzaglia, Fox, Owen Pazzaglia, Casteel, Luke Cramer and York each had an assist.

    Women’s basketball

    •Avery Point lost to No. 2 Massasoit 72-68 in the NJCAA Region 21 tournament semifinals. Former Fitch standout Francesca Foster had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the lead the No. 2 Pointers (10-13). Niantic’s Adeline Smith had 25 points and eight rebounds, former Wheeler standout Adelaide Hauptmann had 16 rebounds and Waterford’s Jade Redo scored 12 for Avery Point.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Taylor Gustafson scored seven goals and had an assist at Coast Guard remained unbeaten with a 14-11 win over Grove City. Ian Feeley and Gaige Kruger had two goals and an assist each, Waterford’s Caleb Holdridge had three assists, Ryan Flynn had two assists and Dan Lucas made 19 saves for the Bears (3-0).

    • Salem State beat Mitchell College 17-1. Weston Schumacher scored for Mitchell (0-4) and Jon Parra-Tobey of New London assisted on the goal.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Merchant Marine outscored Coast Guard 4-0 in the second quarter and went on to a 5-3 victory. Gianna Cascio scored twice, Caitlyn Coates had a goal and Kira Howard, Sarah Skurat and Abby McAllister had assists for the Bears (2-2).

    Men’s hockey

    • Justin Pearson scored three goals and had an assist as UCon closed out its regular season with a 6-5 win over Boston College in a hockey East game. Ty Amonte and Matthew Wood had a goal and an assist each and Jake Black had a goal for the Huskies (20-11-3, 13-9-2).

    Boston College beat UConn 5-3 on Friday night. Jake Veilleux, Ryan Tverberg and Samu Salminen scored for UConn.

    Baseball

    • Bryan Padilla’s three-run double in the top of the 8th inning led UConn to a 5-1 win over Florida Atlantic. The Huskies (5-3) lead 2-1 before Padilla’s double. David Smith had two hits, including an RBI double, and Matt Garbowski drove in a run for UConn. Starter Stephen Quigley got the win, allowing three hits and a run over 6.2 innings.

    Softball

    • UConn beat Radford 8-0 in a five-inning, mercy rule game. The Huskies (8-6) opened the day with a 3-0 loss to host Liberty. Makenzie Mason had two hits and scored twice and Aziah James had two hits for the Huskies against Radford.
