Montville — St. Thomas More’s Tyler Betsey, a junior from Windsor, was named 2022-23 Gatorade Connecticut Player of the Year in boys’ basketball on Wednesday.

Betsey, a 6-foot-8 forward, is the fourth player from T-More to earn the award, which recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the court.

Betsey averaged 21 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Chancellors and was a first team All-New England Prep School Athletic Council Class AAA selection. He is the No. 53 recruit in the nation in the Class of 2024 by ESPN.

Off the court, Betsey has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom while being a member of the study, kayaking and cooking clubs at St. Thomas More. He also volunteers locally on behalf of a Christmas gift and food drive.

“Tyler is an unbelievable worker,” St. Thomas More coach Jere Quinn said in a release. “His improvement has catapulted him to the pinnacle of recruitment and he’s accomplished this with modesty. You wouldn’t know his capabilities by his demeanor.”

UConn freshman center Donovan Clingan won the award the previous two seasons while playing at Bristol Central High School.

College swimming

• Connecticut College sophomore Justin Finkel earned All-American honors with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Finkel broke his own school record with a time of 4:21.47 — shaving more than three seconds off his preliminary time.

College baseball

• UConn Avery Point improved to 6-2 with a 5-3 win over CCBC-Catonsville (Md.). Winning pitcher Alex Mach allowed just one run on there hits over seven innings while striking out nine and Cole Forcellina earned the save. Vance Ward was 2-for-4 with with 2 RBI, a double and stolen base for the Pointers and Jaden Echevarria was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Women’s tennis

• Conn College won for the second straight day, defeating SUNY New Paltz 6-3 in Orlando, Fla. The Camels won all three doubles matches behind, highlighted by a win from NFA’s Anna Slopak and Caitlin Cass, who teamed up for the first time this season to win at No. 1 doubles. Cass also won at No. 1 singles for Conn.
