Local roundup: UConn baseball team continues its roll
Storrs ‐ The UConn baseball team closed out an 8-1 homestand with an 11-0 win over Maryland Baltimore County on Sunday.
The No. 20 Huskies (20-6) completed their third series sweep of the season and second of the nine-game home stand. Five pitchers combined for the shutout, with Jack Sullivan going the first five innings for the win.
Luke Broadhurst led the offense with a 3-for-3 day with a two-run single and RBI single. Ben Huber also had three hits and Dominic Freeberger reached all five times with a pair of hits and three walks.
In other games:
• Avery Point split a doubleheader at Lackawanna Community College, losing the opener 7-6 before winning the second game 13-5. The Pointers (11-6) also split a doubleheader with Rockland Community College on Saturday, losing the opener 4-2 before winning 18-6 in the second game.
On Saturday, Zach Mascaro was 3-for-5 with a homer run, two stole bases and five RBI and Andrew Lozier was 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI in Game 2 for the Pointers. Liam Chamberlain earned the win, striking out five in five innings.
Women’s water polo
• Connecticut College went 4-0 over the weekend, beating Grove City 22-12 and host Utica 10-5. The Camels (9-5) beat Penn State Behrend 20-9 and Washington & Jefferson 16-9 on Saturday. Gigi Sandull led the Camels with 31 goals and six assists in the four games.
