New London names four new coaches for spring season

New London — New London High School announced the hiring of four coaches for the spring season, including two of the school’s alumni.

Chelsea (Phillips) Grillo returns to the position of head girls’ lacrosse coach. Grillo is a former three-time all-state lacrosse selection at St. Bernard, who went on to excel collegiately at Emerson College. In 2014, Grillo founded New London Youth Lacrosse, which introduced lacrosse to the city’s youth.

Grillo served as New London High’s first head girls’ lacrosse coach from 2016-20. The program began as a sub-varsity club team and became a varsity program in 2017. She also served as Mitchell College’s head women’s lacrosse coach.

Mike Morgan, a former Whaler three-sport star athlete, was named head boys’ outdoor track coach. Morgan was the New London High male athlete of the year in 2005, earning 10 varsity letters, three in track. Morgan played football at Bryant University. He is also the head girls’ basketball coach at Ledyard.

Adwoa Bandele-Asante, a former New London tennis standout, has been named head girls’ tennis coach. Bandele-Asante is a graduate of Connecticut College and Howard University. She is also the founder and executive director of One Love Tennis Learning Clinic, a local non-profit that implements a tennis learning curriculum for various ages and diverse backgrounds.

Tim Kwochka is the school’s new head golf coach. Kwochka is a 2022 graduate of Eastern Connecticut University, where he was a member of the lacrosse team. Kwochka is currently a member of the New London High’s health and physical education department.

“Our athletic department is extremely fortunate to be able to welcome back three former Whalers into the fold,” New London athletic director Phil Orbe said. “Chelsea, Mike and Adwoa have all, in the past, represented our school well displaying their Whaler Pride. Tim has resurrected the golf program that did not have a varsity season last spring due to lack of participation.

“We are looking forward to the positive direction each of these coaches will be taking their respective programs.”
