UConn to visit Kansas as part of powerhouse non-conference schedule next season

The UConn men’s basketball team is scheduled to play some powerhouse non-conference opponents next season.

In a meeting between the last college basketball national champions, UConn will visit 2022 title holder Kansas on Dec. 1 in Lawrence as part of the Big East-Big 12 Battle.

Kansas finished with a 28-8 overall record. As a No. 1 seed, the Jayhawks lost to Arkansas, 72-71, the NCAA tournament second round.

The Huskies have dropped all three previous games against Jayhawks, losing the last meeting, 73-61, in the 2016 NCAA tournament second round in Des Moines, Iowa.

In other scheduling news, UConn will compete in the 2023 Empire Classic on Nov. 19-20 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Indiana, Texas and Louisville also are in the field. Match-ups have yet to be announced. It will be the Huskies’ fifth appearance in the tournament and first since 2018.

Texas posted a 29-9 overall record and fell to Miami, 88-81, in the Elite Eight. Indiana (23-12) also was an NCAA tourney team and lost Miami, 85-69, in the second round. Louisville stumbled to a 4-28 mark.

UConn knocked off Miami, 72-59, in the national semifinals Saturday before beating San Diego State, 76-59, Monday to earn the program’s fifth national championship title.

Looking ahead to the following season, UConn will play in the 2024 Maui Invitational in Hawaii, joining Michigan State, Auburn, North Carolina, Iowa State, Memphis, Dayton and Colorado in the field.
