    Local roundup: Kessler’s double earns Wheeler a win in 8

    North Stonington — Kyle Kessler’s RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Wheeler High School to a 9-8 victory over Grasso Tech in a nonleague baseball game Friday.

    The Lions (3-1) trailed 8-5 before Garrett Lenihan hit a three-run double to tie the game. James Main, Sean Bergel and Kessler had two hits each for Wheeler. Tito Arias scored three runs and Derek Kennedy had two hits and drove in two runs for Grasso (1-1).

    In other games:

    • Daniel Hess pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and Norwich Tech scored twice in the sixth inning to edge New London 7-6. Collin Schulze had two hits, including a double, for Norwich Tech (2-0), and Josh Hanks and Logan Spillane added two hits each. Derrel Mitchell and Darius Aquinio each had three hits for New London (0-2) and Eddie Torres pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts.

    • Plainfield beat Fitch 5-4 on a sacrifice fly by Joe Romano in the bottom of the seventh inning. Donte Valentine tripled, Isaiah Anderson and Nate Wagner had doubles and Isaac Frank and Valentine each scored twice for Fitch (1-2). Tyler Ezzell had two hits for Plainfield and scored the winning run.

    • John Bureau homered and scored four runs as East Lyme beat Griswold 15-2 in five innings. Owen Elmer, A.J. Montejano and Bureau drove in three runs each and Liam Cochrane and winning pitcher Gavin O’Brien drove in two runs each for the Vikings (3-0). Jake Duthrie’s double was the only hit for Griswold (1-2).

    • Montville scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and beat Ledyard 15-4 in five innings. Jack Treat was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a triple for Montville (2-1). Anthony Martin had two doubles and drove in three runs and Cole Terni, Ryley Beyer and Luke Chapman had two hits each for Montville. Ethan Petrowski (triple) and Lou Anaya had two hits each and Cam Weber doubled and scored twice for Ledyard (0-3).

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Ledyard swept singles play and beat Lyman Memorial 6-1. Tyler Howard, Trieu Hendrick, Ben Wolford and Clark Ysewyn won their matches for the Colonels (1-0) along with the doubles teams of Malloch Allison-Sebastian Fieldsend and Luke Anderson and Justin Grenger. Aaron Rodriguez and Collin Fonseca won at No. 3 doubles for Lyman (0-3).

    • Conrad Tobiassen and Tucker Callahan earned a win at No. 1 doubles, leading a doubles sweep for Stonington in a 5-2 victory over Fitch in ECC Division I. Sam Lund and Joshua Lord won at No. 2 doubles and Peter Schoenecker and Brett Caron at No. 3 for the Bears (3-0, 2-0). Matthew Turrisi and Chase Donnarummo added singles wins. Fitch’s Will Albrikes defeated Stonington’s Brady O’Neil 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Andres Sardar won at No. 2 singles for Fitch (2-1, 1-1).

    Girls’ lacrosse

    • Kayla Ferryman had two goals for New London in a 16-2 loss to Enfield. Kim Galarza made 12 saves for New London (0-1).

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • New London lost to Putnam 5-2 on Thursday. Fortune Adekoya and Trevin Robledo-Thompson won their matches for New London (0-2).

    H.S. girls’ golf

    • Waterford opened its season with a loss to Woodstock in an ECC match. Ella Rose Musumeci of Woodstock was the medalist with a 56 and Waterford’s Jacqueline Tran was second at 57. Woodstock shot a 251 and the Lancers did not post a team score.

    College softball

    • Lillia Farlow doubled home Christine Carey for the game’s only run in Coast Guard’s 1-0 victory over WPI in game one of a doubleheader. Carey went 3-for-3 and Isabelle Shroyer pitched a three-hitter for the Bears (14-4 overall, 2-2 NEWMAC). WPI won the second game 4-1, scoring all four runs in the third. Katie Becker had two hits for Coast Guard.

    • First-year shortstop and leadoff hitter Emma Marelli of Waterford reached base five times with four hits (including a triple) and a walk, scored five runs and drove in one for Eastern Connecticut in a doubleheader sweep of Western Connecticut. Eastern (10-8 overall, 2-0 Little East) won the opener 12-4 and took the second game 5-2, getting back-to-back complete-game pitching performances from Carley Stoker and Alyssa Vilchez.
