Local roundup: Mitchell softball team sweeps NEC
New London ‐ The Mitchell College softball team swept its New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader against New England College on Sunday.
The Mariners (16-12, 7-1) won the opener 8-4 and the second game 9-1 in six innings. Gemma Landry had four hits, scored three times and drove in three runs for Mitchell.
Jenna Bennett was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Emma LaBreck doubled twice and Brooke Whitmarsh had two hits and two RBI in the opener. Whitmarsh was 3-for-3 and Emily Reynolds, Madison Nicynski and Landry had two RBI each in the second game. Katelyn Lipsky and Reynolds had complete-game victories.
• UConn beat Butler 3-2 to sweep the three-game Big East Conference series. The Huskies (28-11, 15-3) trailed 2-1 before Savannah Ring’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Aziah James had two hits and stole a base and Lexi Hastings and Hope Jenkins had doubles for UConn. Payton Kinney (11-5) pitched the first six innings for the win, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Meghan O’Neil retired the side in order in the seventh for her sixth save.
College baseball
• Avery Point swept a doubleheader from Monroe Community College, winning the opener 4-3 and the second game 4-0. Xavier Burgos was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Elian Collado doubled and won the opener with an RBI single.
The Pointers (18-8) got a shutout from Liam Chamberlain in Game 2. Chamberlain pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and Riley Carew backed him with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, homer and three RBI.
• Mitchell College was swept by Salve Regina in a nonleague doubleheader, ending the Mariners’ eight-game winning streak. Salve (20-6-1) won the opener 12-5 and the second game 15-7.
Angel Galindez was 3-for-4 and East Lyme’s Owen Robbins doubled and drove in two runs in the opener for Mitchell (24-6). Justin Adorno and Bo Yaworski had three hits each in Game 2 for Mitchell.
H.S. crew
• Both the East Lyme boys’ and girls’ crew teams raced in the Simsbury/Tabor Academy Invitational Regatta on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury, Mass. The girls’ second varsity boat finished first, the first varsity boat placed second to Boston Latin in a time of 5:38 and the third varsity boat also placed second. East Lyme’s first varsity boat finished fourth overall, just a second behind Simsbury for the third spot.
Coxswain Kaylyn Wojcik along with Sarah Long, Darby Faragher, Gabby Gottschall, Sandra Kirvelevicius, Fiona Samuelson, Katie Whewell, Ava Mauri and Sara Muller competed on the Vikings’ first varsity girls’ boat while the boys’ first varsity boat included coxswain Jack Wojcik, Zane Cappon, Devin Minogue, Kai Jolly-Ballantine, Rowan Wilson, Darius Kirvelevicius, Tyler Watson-Griffin, Aiden Minogue and Jonathan Kwak.
H.S. baseball
• Grasso Tech lost to RHAM 13-6 in a nonleague game on Saturday. Jesus Sanchez singled an homered for the Eagles (3-3).
