    Local roundup: Three UConn players sign as NFL free agents

    Storrs ‐ UConn football players Robert Burns, Jake Guidone and Brandon Bouyer-Randle signed NFL contracts as undrafted free agents on Sunday while Ian Swenson and Tre Wortham have received invites to NFL rookie minicamps next month.

    Burns, a fullback, signed on with the Chicago Bears. Guidone, a center, was signed by the Baltimore Ravens. Bouyer-Randle, a linebacker, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    Swenson, a linebacker, will attend the rookie minicamp with the New York Jets and Wortham, a cornerback, will join Burns after receiving a minicamp invitation from the Bears.

    College softball

    • UConn completed Big East Conference play with a 4-3 win over DePaul. UConn (32-13, 19-5) closed out its regular season by hosting St. Peter’s on Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. UConn hosts the Big East tournament beginning on May 10.

    The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the win. Kaitlyn Kibling scored on an error to tie the game and Lauren Benson scored the go-ahead run on a single by Lexi Hastings. Payton Kinney pitched the first 5.1innings before Meghan O’Neil came on to finish the sixth and start the seventh. After the first two DePaul batters reached, Kinney came back in and got the last two outs for her third save of the season. O’Neil (6-4) got the win.

    Grace Jenkins doubled and drove in two runs, Hastings was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and Aziah James had two hits and stole a base.

    Sun sign Battles

    The Connecticut Sun announced they have signed guard Diamond Battles to a training camp contract. Battles was the graduate transfer last season at Georgia. She averaged a team-high 14.7 points, along with 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals for the Bulldogs.

    Battles played four seasons at the Central Florida and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in her last season.

    The Sun open the season on May 19 at the Indiana Fever. Their home opener is May 21 against the Washington Mystics at 1 p.m.
