    Local roundup: Sun beat Dream 85-68 in preseason game

    Atlanta – The Connecticut Sun wrapped up its two-game WNBA preseason schedule with an 85-68 win over the Atlanta Dream on Sunday at Gateway Center Arena.

    The Sun beat the New York Liberty 63-57 on Wednesday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun open the regular season on Friday, playing at the Indiana Fever at 7 p.m. Connecticut’s home opener in Sunday, May 21 against the Washington Mystics at 1 p.m.

    Tiffany Hayes, the former UConn star who played her first 10 seasons with the Dream, led the Sun with a game-high 20 points. Alyssa Thomas had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Brionna Jones had 12 points and eight rebounds.

    H.S. girls’ track

    • Ledyard sophomore Kate Littler set a school record in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the prestigious Glenn Loucks Games on Saturday in White Plains, N.Y. Littler finished in a time of 7:49.11, which was good for 16th place. The time qualifies Littler for the Nike Nationals at the University of Oregon on June 16.

    College baseball

    • Butler scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to snap an 8-8 tie and beat No. 9 UConn 11-8 in a Big East Conference game. UConn (38-12, 13-4) had its nine-game winning streak stopped. Ben Huber drove in three runs and Jake Studley, Dominic Freeberger and Huber had two hits each for UConn.

    Speedbowl

    • Timmy Jordan of Plainfield won the 35-lap SK Modifieds race at the New London-Speedbowl on Saturday night. Anthony Flannery finished second and Eric Berndt was third.

    Other winners included Andrew Molleur of Shelton (Late Models), Al Stone III of Durham (Street Stocks), Christopher Garside of Groton (Mini Stocks), Brody Monahan of Waterford (Trucks) and Glen Marion Jr. of Willimantic (Compact Enduros)
