    Local roundup: Bonner, Thomas named WNBA All-Star reserves; Sun’s White and staff will coach

    Connecticut’s DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas were named WNBA All-Star reserves on Saturday while head coach Stephanie White and her staff will coach one of the teams.

    Bonner, a guard-forward will be making her fifth selection while Thomas, a forward will be making her fourth. White qualified by guiding the Sun to the WNBA’s second best record (12-4) as of June 30.

    The game will be played at Saturday, July 15 at 8:30 p.m. at Michelob Ultra Arena ni Las Vegas.

    Bonner, now in her 14th season, was averaging 17.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0. assists and 1.1 steals per-game prior to Saturday’s game at Las Vegas, including a career-high 41 points against the Aces on June 8.

    Thomas, in her 10th season, was averaging 14.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 2.1 steals prior to Saturday, with her rebounding and steals number leading the WNBA (she is ranked second in assists). Thomas also had triple-doubles in three of her past four games and five career triple-doubles during the regular-season is a WNBA record.

    This will be White’s first opportunity to be a head coach in the All-Star game. She was named an assistant coach for the Eastern Conference team in 2013 as a member of the Indiana Fever staff, but missed the game due to the birth of twins Avery and Aiden.

    She will coach the team captained by New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, the ex-UConn great while Becky Hammon of Las Vegas will coach the team captained by one of her own players, A’ja Wilson. Another former UConn player, forward Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, was also named an All-Star reserve.

    • Sam Kilpatrick (Belmont), Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) and Maddix Dalena (UConn) each hit their first home runs of the season to lead the Mystic Schooners to a 7-1 road victory over the Keene Swamp Bats on Friday night in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Kilpatrick finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Kopack was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Dalena hit a solo homer. Julian Stevens (Missouri) also had two hits for Mystic (11-8) while starting pitcher Everett Catlett (Georgetown) improved to 3-0 by allowing only two hits over five shutout innings.

    • The Pittsfield Suns earned a split of Friday night’s Futures Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader at Dodd Stadium with a 5-3 win over the Norwich Sea Unicorns. D.J. Perron (Rhode Island), who had a pair of doubles in Norwich’s 13-5 win in the opener, went 3-for-3 in the second game for the Sea Unicorns (19-13) and drove in three runs.

    • East Lyme/Montville defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 2-1 on Thursday night as Alexander Mitchell’s double keyed a fifth-inning comeback for East LymeMontville. Elliot Regan pitched the sixth inning to earn the save while Aiden Coffee pitched will in defeat for Lyme/Old Lyme.
