    Local roundup: Sea Unicorns beat first-place Worcester

    Worcester, Mass. — The Norwich Sea Unicorns overcame an early 5-1 deficit to defeat the first-place Worcester Bravehearts 11-9 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitton Field.

    Dean Ferrara (Fairfield) had another big game for the Unicorns (24-15). He raised his average to .429 by going 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

    Zack Kovalchik (Sacred Heart) added a double, home run and two RBI for Norwich while Jackson Ferrigno (North Alabama) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run.

    Worcester is 28-11.

    Legion baseball

    • Waterford won its eighth straight game with a 3-2 win over East Hartford/Manchester in the Stars and Stripes tournament, a Zones 6 and 3 crossover event that counts in the overall standings.

    Anthony Jessuck’s RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie for Waterford (12-2) and reliever Ethan Chavez did the rest close the door in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. He allowed only one run on three hits over four innings while striking out six and not walking a batter. Sean Salvador, Zion Fraser and Jackson Long had two hits apiece for Waterford.

    State Babe Ruth (13-15)

    • Host Norwalk advanced to the Connecticut Babe Ruth (13-15) title round with a 1-0 win over Waterford. Waterford will face the winner of Monday’s elimination game between Fairfield and Shelton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the losers’ bracket final. Lucas Saunders pitched well in defeat for Waterford, striking out four, while Max Petrini and Matt Gonet had the only hits off Norwalk’s Jackson Ermo, who struck out eight.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Waterford advanced to the winners’ bracket final of the Connecticut Babe Ruth (15) tournament with a 10-3 win over Bethel. Waterford will play New Milford on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at Trumbull for a spot in the championship round. Cole Peckham was the winning pitcher, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts over five innings, while Matthew Shampine was 3-for-5 and Alex Picardi had a pair of hits.

    District 10 LL baseball (10-12)

    • Waterford defeated Montville 12-7 on Saturday as Reily Karasevicz had three hits and three RBI for Waterford and A.J. Stefano, Cam Dlubac and Griff Fiano drove in two runs apiece. Jonathan Menchacha homered for Montville.

    • East Lyme defeated Stonington 6-1 on Saturday as Kyle Cellemme struck out five in two innings and also had three hits. Greyson Biggs had an RBI triple for East Lyme and August Foster had an RBI double for Stonington.

    District 10 LL baseball (8-10)

    • Waterford defeated Mystic 11-3 on Friday night as winning pitcher Mason Mazzella had four strikeouts and Owen Fox and Nick Holmes had multiple RBIs. Callan McDuffee had a hit and RBI for Mystic.

    District 10 LL baseball (9-11)

    • Waterford defeated East Lyme 7-1 to win the District 10 title on Friday night as Liam Holmes pitched a complete game two-hitter and went 3-for-3 with two runs scored an an RBI. Spencer Haffey added a pair of solo home runs and scored three runs and River Clark was 2-2 with an RBI. Alex Mitchell pitched well for Est Lyme, striking out six in four innings while going 1-for-2 at the plate. Waterford opens Connecticut Section 3 play on Wednesday against host Madison.

    State Section 2 baseball (50/70)

    • Ledyard defeated Madison 10-2 on Friday night at Coventry as winning pitcher Jackson McVeigh pitched five innings and also scored three runs. Nicholas Fermo drove in three runs for Ledyard while Anthony Feraco and Jayce Hayward had triples.
