Local roundup: Norwich Invite final postponed

Norwich – For the first time in roughly 30 years, rain forced the postponement of the Norwich Invitational championship match.

Finalists Chris DeLucia and Holden Sullivan will play for the title at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Norwich Golf Course.

“Some of the guys who have been around for a while said there was one year 30 or 40 years back the championship match got suspended like this as well,” pro Mike Svab said.

Golfers in all flights battled miserable conditions during the soggy 97th Norwich Invite.

It just may take until the rescheduled match on Aug. 19 for the rain-soaked golfers to finally dry out.

“I give the players all the credit in the world today,” Svab said. “They started in the rain and they slugged it out the whole day until the course couldn’t take it anymore.

“We had a couple downpours at around 12-12:30 that the course couldn’t overcome. We have one of the best draining golf courses and the rain was too much. There’s no way we could have played the championship.”

The championship flight semifinals were halted at one point for about an hour but the four remaining golfers managed to resume play and finish the round.

“They were on the 14th hole and we pulled them in,” Svab said. “The decision was made to try to finish this round. We had one little window for about 45 minutes. They finished and they were both actually good matches.”

DeLucia, the No. 15 seed, out-lasted No. 3 Steve Chevalier, 2 and 1, in the semifinals while Sullivan, the top seed, won by the same score over No. 12 Sean Vigue.

Sullivan, the son of Connecticut Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti, was the medalist in qualifying round action on Friday, firing a 5-under 66. He’ll be appearing in his first Norwich Invite final. He reached the semifinals of the First Flight last year.

DeLucia, who has won multiple Norwich Golf Course men’s club titles, will be vying for his second Invite title, earning his first one in 2018.

Svab expects the rescheduled championship match in August will be well attended.

“We’re going to shut the whole place down just for that,” Svab said. “We’ll have a really good crowd with the DeLucia crowd and Sullivan crowd. It will be a really nice event.”

Then Svab added: “It better not rain that day.”
