    Local roundup: Waterford Babe Ruth 14 team wins regional opener

    Providence – Waterford opened play in the New England Regional 14-year-old Babe Ruth baseball tournament by beating Cranston, R.I., 11-0 on Wednesday.

    Colby Sheehan drove in five runs and starting pitcher Matthew Shampine threw five no-hit innings to lead Waterford, which plays two more pool play games before single-elimination play this weekend.

    Sheehan hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, a two-run triple in the third and a two-run double in the sixth. Shampine struck out 10 with no walks.

    Waterford led 6-0 after scoring five runs in the third, on Riley Montana’s two-run single, Cole Peckham’s RBI single and Sheehan’s triple.

    Montana was 3-for-4 and Alex Picardi, Peckham and Shampine had two hits each for Waterford.

    NECBL

    • The North Shore Navigators scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and rallied for a 3-2 win over the Mystic Schooners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game.

    Jacob Jarrell hit a two-run homer to tie the game and Stan DeMartinis followed with a solo shot to give North Shore the lead. Caleb Stelly (Louisiana-Lafayette) singled, doubled and drove in a run for Mystic (21-13). Schooners starter Everett Catlett (Georgetown) allowed two hits in four innings and Sam Favieri (Quinnipiac) followed with two hitless innings.

    The Schooners rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Danbury Westerners 9-8 on Tuesday night. Mystic eventually tied the game at 7-7 in the eighth on an RBI single by Sam Kilpatrick (Belmont) and took a 9-7 lead on back-to-back bases-loaded walks.

    Jay Allmer worked around a pair of base his in the ninth to earn his ninth save while Evin Sullivan (Binghamton) had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored, Jack Goodman (Pepperdine) was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and Anthony DePino (Rhode Island) had a hit and two RBI.

    DePino was one of 13 players to be selected to participate in the NECBL Home Run Derby on Sunday at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass., home of the North Shore Navigators. The derby begins at 2 p.m. with the NECBL All-Star Game to follow at 4:30 p.m. DePino has a team-high four home runs and also leads the Schooners in RBI (17) and runs scored (17).

    FCBL

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns lost to the Pittsfield Suns 7-6 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game. Jackson Ferrigno (North Alabama) and Alec Ritch (Middlebury) had two hits each for Norwich (31-17) and Ritch hit a solo home run. DJ Perron (Rhode Island) and Zack Kovalchik (Sacred Heart) had doubles for the Sea Unicorns.

    Norwich beat the first-place Worcester Bravehearts 4-2 on Tuesday night. Christo Garrelts (Elon) pitched five shutout innings for his second win. He allowed only only three hits and has not allowed an earned run in 24 innings this season. Joey DeMucci (Monmouth) and Dean Ferrara (Fairfield) had two hits apiece for Norwich.

    Jimmy Fund softball
