    Local roundup: Waterford advances to New England (14) Babe Ruth tournament semis

    North Providence, R.I. — Waterford erupted for six runs in the second inning and went on to defeat North Providence 11-1 in a five-inning elimination game at the New England Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball tournament on Saturday.

    Waterford will play Trumbull in Saturday’s semifinals at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to the New England title game at 4 p.m. against one of two Massachusetts teams, Pittsfield or Braintree, who play at 1 p.m.

    Waterford beat Trumbull twice to win the Connecticut championship, including a 5-1 win in the title game.

    Cole Peckham went the distance for Waterford, allowing only two hits while walking three and striking out four.

    Alex Picardi had a bases-clearing triple to highlight Waterford’s six-run second while Colby Sheehan added an RBI double, Matthew Shampine had an RBI single and Vincent DeAngelis had a bases-loaded walk.

    Picard also had an RBI single during a five-run fifth that also included an RBI single by Evan Brehler, a bases-loaded walk to Peckham, an error and Sheehan being hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

    Legion state tournament

    • Waterford advanced to the winners’ bracket in the Connecticut American Legion Northern Division double-elimination tournament with an 8-0 victory over Northeast of Tolland.

    Waterford, the top seed, will host Ellington on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Ellington defeated Middletown 15-5.

    Justin Saad, one of three Waterford pitchers, earned the win, scattering three hits over three innings.

    Waterford’s bottom three hitters of Anthony Jessuck, Jackson Long and Sean Salvador combined for five of its eight hits while scoring four runs and driving in three. Salvador, batting ninth, went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs with a single in the second.

    Cam McGugan also drove in two runs while Martin Light added an RBI single.

    State LL baseball (8-10)

    • Aidan Karasevicz pitched a complete game with five strikeouts as Waterford beat Guilford 11-0 to win the Section 3 title. Owen Fox, Karasevicz, Dean Skovinski, Trevor Jenkins, Nick Holmes, Cade Benevides, Wyatt Hogertty and Jaxson Pawlak drove in runs for Waterford, which opens play in the state tournament at Terryville on Tuesday.

    Boys’ soccer

    • Nico Matteucci, a recent Bacon Academy graduate, was one of only 54 boys to earn High School Scholar All-America honors by the United Soccer Coaches Association. Only three Connecticut players made the team, which is based on cumulative achievement in the classroom as well as on the field.

    Matteucci, a midfielder, graduated with a cumulative GPA of 4.41. He was also named to The Day’s All-Area boys’ soccer team, the Class M all-state team, and a was an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II first team all-star.

    Fencing

    • Waterford’s Hazel Siu finished eighth, earning a national medal, during the recent National Fencing Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. Three other Waterford fencers also competed, all in Division III, with Maple Siu placing 38th, Kyijonig Tenzin 134th and Jiarou Liao 153rd.
