    Local roundup: Josh Mooney named Male Athlete of the Year by CT Sports Media Alliance

    Josh Mooney, who completed his high school career at Stonington by winning a national championship in the 110-meter high hurdles, has been named recipient of the Bill Lee Male Athlete of the Year award by the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance.

    Mooney, who will continue his track and field career at UConn, will be honored during the CSMA’s 81st annual Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.

    Mooney also won the New England championship in the 110 HH after winning the CIAC decathlon title for the second straight year and adding State Open titles in the 110 HH, 300 hurdles and javelin.

    Darien’s Chloe Humphrey, the USA Lacrosse high school girls’ player of the year, will receive the Hank O’Donnell Female Athlete of the Year Award while the Doc McInerney High School Coaches of the Year are Woodland softball coach Loren Luddy and Haddam-Killingworth baseball coach Mark Brookes.

    The previously announced Gold Key recipients for 2023 include longtime Norwich Free Academy coach and athletic director Gary Makowicki, Waterford native and 1976 U.S. Olympian Jan Merrill-Morin, North Branford field hockey coach Babby Nuhn, Darien volleyball coach Laurie LaRusso and retired Major League Baseball umpire Terry Tata.

    In addition, The Day’s Vickie Fulkerson will receive the Art McGinley Media Award and East Lyme’s Ann and Paul Dagle, advocates for suicide prevention among student athletes, will receive the Bob Casey Courage Award.

    Jim Roy receives national honor

    • Girls on the Run of Southeastern Connecticut has announced that local volunteer Jim Roy has been awarded the Remarkable Volunteer Award by its national headquarters, Girls on the Run International. The award honors individuals who “shine a light on the inspirational and transformative impact volunteers have on Girls on the Run participants and communities.”

    Girls on the Run is a youth development program for girls in grades 3-8. Roy was presented his award prior to a recent Monday Fun Run by GOTR executive director Kate McDonald, board chair Angela Thomas and Jeff Anderson of Kelley’s Pace.

    “Jim Roy has served on our Board of Directors for many years and has been a strong ambassador for the program and for our incredible GOTR girls,” Thomas said in a release. “His work as a fundraiser, volunteer, board member and advocate has made an incredible impact on our council.”

    • Less than 24 hours after completing a sweep of the North Shore Navigators with a 2-0 win on Tuesday night and clinching a playoff berth, the Mystic Schooners held on to defeat the Newport Gulls 5-4 in the first game of New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader.

    Thomas Ellisen (UConn) allowed just one run and three hits while striking out five over six innings for the Schooners (26-15) while Sam Kilpatrick (Belmont) led the offene by going 3-for-4. In Tuesday’s Game 2 win, Drew Kron (UConn) was 2-for-2 and scored a run while Waterford’s Connor Podeszwa (Tufts) pitched a perfect seventh with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save.
