    H.S. roundup: Bacon Academy girls upset No. 1 Waterford 1-0 in ECC Div. II soccer matchup

    Waterford — Audrey Palmer’s goal with 19:42 left in the first half Tuesday was all Bacon Academy needed to post a 1-0 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II girls’ soccer victory over previously unbeaten Watefrord on Tuesday night.

    The Lancers (3-0, 0-1) entered the game ranked as the No. 1 team in the state among Class S and M teams and had not allowed a goal.

    Goalie Ariana Pennington made six saves for Bacon (2-1-1, 2-0) and Victoria Sturm stopped two shots for Waterford.

    In other games:

    • Keriana Heredia and Olivia Degenais scored goals as Plainfield defeated Lyman Memorial 2-1 in ECC Div. III. Avery Volle scored for the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-1).

    • Katie Pierce scored four goals as Wheeler defeated New London 6-1 in an ECC Division IV match. Hannah Viele and Lauren Glaza also scored for the Lions (2-1, 2-0). Alina Skrabacz scored for the Whalers (1-4, 0-1).

    • Norwich Free Academy defeated Stonington 5-0 in an ECC Division I match. Chloe Green 2 scored for NFA (3-1-1, 1-1) while Brooke Bolles, Colby Gisleson and Alex Tabilas also scored for the Wildcats and Jordan Fabry had four assists.

    • Merzako Kamboli, Capri Sferrazza, and Vanessa Syphrett had a goal apiece for St. Bernard during its 3-1 win over Griswold. Caitlyn Kuhn had five saves and Sienna Sferrazza had two assists the the Saints.

    • Morgan Blanchard and Spencer Chviek scored second-half goals as Killingly defeated Montville 2-0. It was the first loss of the season for the Wolves (2-1-1), who held a 17-3 edge in shots but couldn’t beat goalie Erika Horne, who made seven saves. Katie Myjak made one save for Montville.

    Field hockey

    • Fitch defeated NFA, 5-0, in the ECC. Ada Ellis and Izzy Ash scored two goals apiece for the Falcons (3-0, 2-0) while Riley Harrington also scored. Goalie Emma Kaplin made 14 saves for NFA (0-3, 0-3).

    • East Lyme and Stonington played to a 1-1 tie in the ECC. Marina Lewandowski gave the Bears (2-1-1, 2-0-1) a lead until Lily Gibson tied it for East Lyme (1-0-1, 1-0-1).

    • Westbrook/Old Lyme battled Haddam-Killingworth to a scoreless tie in the Shoreline Conference. Abby Demars made one save for Westbrook/Old Lyme (2-1-1, 1-1-1).

    Volleyball

    • Ledyard defeated Putnam 25-9, 25-16 and 25-9. Keara Opelenik had 11 kills, Emily Peckham had 11 assists, Kylee Gill five aces and Bella Schweitzer had 10 aces and seven kills for the Colonels (2-2).

    Swimming

    • Haddam-Killingworth defeated Ledyard/St. Bernard 93-73 in a nonleague meet. The Colonels (1-3) picked up individual wins from Anna Kate O’Donnell in the 200 IM (2:38.56) and 100 butterfly (1:10.36), Seidi Schiro in the 50 freestyle (29.93) and Thelma Grogon in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.43).

    Ledyard, Old Lyme honored

    • Ledyard and Old Lyme were two of 29 Connecticut highs selected to receive Michaels Jewelers Achievement Cup awards for the 2022-23 season, the CIAC announced on Tuesday. The awards, which recognizes athletic programs for their “willingness to subscribe to the Class Act Sportsmanship standards, empowering students to take an active role in their school climate, and their continued support for community service,” will be presented during the CIAC’s 17th annual Sportsmanship Conference on Oct. 3. Old Lyme was selected for the fifth straight year.
