East Lyme — There was considerable buzz around the East Lyme Aquatics Center for most of Saturday that this would be the year that East Lyme High School would finally lose at the Eastern Connecticut Conference swim championships, with the Fitch cooperative team capturing the league’s regular-season title.

But the Vikings won again for the same reason they’ve won so many others over the years: depth. Fitch had more individual winners, but East Lyme filled the results sheet in every event.

The Vikings finished with 564 points to win their 23rd straight championship meet, never having lost since the meet’s inception.

The co-op made up of athletes from Fitch, Stonington, New London and Wheeler had 535, followed by Waterford, 255; Norwich Free Academy 207, Ledyard/St. Bernard 198 and Montville with 10.

“We’re very excited to have pulled together a team win,” East Lyme coach Rob Bouchey said. “All our athletes stepped up and performed wonderfully. I’m very proud of how our ladies stayed focused on the title and took care of business.”

East Lyme’s winners came in the 200 freestyle relay (Ella Pape, Hannah Socha, Julia Morcos, Ruby Thoms, 1:46.02), Pape in the 100 freestyle (56.91) and Jenna Levine in diving.

Fitch’s Anna Orpahnides, named earlier by the league coaches as the ECC Swimmer of the Year, was named the meet’s Outstanding Swimmer. Orphanides won the 50 freestyle (25.46) and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.20).

She also swam a leg of the victorious 200 medley relay with Kaitlyn Kumpf, Laura Letellier and Elliott Singer and on the winning 400 free relay, joining Sophia Pacheco, Singer and Jai-Lynn Wheeler.

The Outstanding Swimmer honor is a points system based on the competitors’ times in individual events.

    Fitch’s Pacheco was a double-winner, earning the 200 freestyle in 2:03.32 and 500 freestyle in 5:34.38.

“I’ve overcome some health problems, and that’s made this a wildly successful year,” said Pacheco, who discovered an issue with iron levels in her blood last year after passing out in school. “Once I fixed all that, it’s like I became a new person. It’s been a fun season. All my teammates are very positive all the time.”

Singer won the 100 butterfly (1:00.99) for the Falcons, which went 8-0 in the ECC during the regular season, while Kumpf won the backstroke (1:03.26) and Letellier won the breaststroke in 1:11.61.

NFA’s Natalie Bezanson won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.68.
