    Local roundup: Coast Guard tops Mitchell in men’s basketball

    New London — Ben Yagey scored 22 points and had nine rebounds to lead Coast Guard to a 79-63 win over host Mitchell College in a men’s basketball game on Tuesday.

    Elijah Parent scored 10 points and Mitch Shettles had 12 points for Coast Guard (4-1).

    Jaylyn Clardy scored a game-high 28 points and had 10 rebounds for lead Mitchell (0-4) and teammate Brandon Lee had 10 rebounds and seven points.

    In other games:

    • Connecticut College suffered its first loss of the season, falling 80-64 to No. 4 Keene State in a nonleague game. David Murray had 19 points and 15 rebounds and Billy Whelan scored 13 for the Camels (3-1). Preseason All-American Jeff Hunter scored 32 for Keene (3-1).

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Class L champion East Lyme finished second in the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association final Class LL/L poll. The Vikings (21-1-1) received two of the 11 first-place votes and 95 points. Class LL champ Hall of West Hartford was No. 1, getting the other nine first-place votes for 108 points.

    Class M runnerup Stonington finished fifth in the Class M/S poll. The Bears (13-9) had 63 points. Class S champion Old Saybrook, which handed East Lyme’s it’s only loss, was first with eight of the 11 first-place votes and 107 points.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Stonington finished 12th in the final state coaches’ poll. The Bears (16-3-1) advanced to the Class S semifinals and won both the Eastern Connecticut Conference regular season and tournament titles.

    H.S. football

    • All tickets must be purchased at the gates on Thanksgiving Day morning for the Fitch at Ledyard game at Bill Mignault Field in Ledyard. Ticket gates will open at 8:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. game. Tickets are $10 for all spectators, adults, senior citizens and students and are cash only sales. Tickets will not be available on Go Fan and we are not selling tickets in advance at either school.

    College honors

    • UConn guard KK Arnold was selected as the Big East Freshman of the Week after helping the eighth-ranked Huskies to two wins last week. Arnold averaged 9.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game last week while shooting 63.6 percent from the field. Arnold was selected as the Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year.

    •Five members of the Connecticut College women's soccer team have earned Academic All-District accolades as announced by the College Sports Communicators. Senior Sarah Hall, Mya Johnson of Old Lyme and Kristyn Moran, junior Clare Mulvihill and sophomore Alexa Weiner were among those honored.

    • Six members of the Connecticut College men's soccer team have earned Academic All-District accolades as announced by the College Sports Communicators. Seniors Sam Boehm, Marco Cerezo, Jake Creus and Matt Scoffone, junior Peter Silvester and sophomore Elliot Spatz were among those honored.
