Boston — The Boston Celtics and Connecticut Sun announced Thursday that the Sun will play a 2024 regular-season game at TD Garden, home of the Celtics.

The Sun will play an opponent to be determined on the Celtics’ home floor Aug. 20.

"The Sun is New England’s professional women’s basketball team with passionate fans across the region,” Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti said before the Celtics game against Cleveland on Thursday night at the Garden.

“Hosting our game in Boston, a place full of such a rich, winning tradition for New England sports, just made sense. Our vision is to provide access and exposure to the Connecticut Sun brand to thousands of sports fans, children and their families, and for young girls to see first-hand that they can play at Boston’s hallowed TD Garden someday.

“This all would not be possible without the support of our partners at TD Garden and the Boston Celtics family, sharing their world class fan experience playbook with us. We are proud to be New England's WNBA team, and we can’t wait to shine in Boston."

The Sun have played virtually all of their home games at Mohegan Sun Arena. In their first season (2003) Connecticut played at the XL Center as well.

Among those in attendance to celebrate the announcement Thursday were Rizzotti, Sun forward and 2022 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year Brionna Jones and Celtics guard and two-time NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown.

The Sun, featuring All-Stars Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner, were 27-13 last season, third in the WNBA standings, and reached the semifinals of the league playoffs.

“The Connecticut Sun is thrilled to have the opportunity to play the first ever WNBA regular-season game in Boston at the TD Garden arena,” Sun general manager Darius Taylor said in a press release.

“We know that Boston and the surrounding New England area has a strong passion for the game and a historic sports tradition. We are honored to partner with the Boston Celtics and TD Garden to showcase the WNBA and to help expand Connecticut Sun fandom to such a supportive and enthusiastic sports community.”
