    Local roundup: A point shy of perfect, NFA wrestling goes 4-1 at Trumbull Duals

    Trumbull — Eddie Lavoie (132 pounds) and Zaire Wallace (190) each had five pins for the Norwich Free Academy on Saturday at the Trumbull Duals, with the Wildcats finishing 4-1.

    NFA (10-2) defeated Manchester 72-12, Pomperaug 75-6, Amity 68-12 and Stratford 65-12, losing to defending Class LL champion Trumbull 40-39 in pool play.

    Landon Herdic (106), Brock Nowakowski (113), Joshua Cuevas (120) and Jackson Sorel (126) also went 5-0 on the day with four pins each, while Dylan Vanegas (150) was 5-0 with two pins, a forfeit, a decision and a tech fall. John Dexter had three pins at 144 pounds, Naim Wallace had three at 157 and Logan Jenkins had three at 175.

    In other matches:

    • Zachary Ruest was 4-0 with four pins as Waterford went 3-1 in the Whippet Duals in Windham. Waterford defeated Rockville 42-31, East Lyme/Norwich Tech 45-36 and Fitch 45-33 while falling to Guilford 58-24. Lucas Gannotti (150 pounds) also went 4-0 for the Lancers (6-1), with two pins and a pair of decisions, while Devon Powers added three pins at 175 pounds and Aidan Piccolo (126) and Lukas Turner (157) had two each.

    Against Waterford, East Lyme’s Angel Stimson (106), Gianno Pearson (120), Riely Georgian (132), Lincoln Carlson (175) and Jonathan Harms (215) recorded pins.

    Fitch was 2-2 in the event, beating Middletown 40-29 and E.O. Smith 45-36, while falling to Windham 63-18 and Waterford. Lance Stewart (144 pounds) and Brenden Vine (285) each had four pins for the Falcons and Shad Stewart (150) had three pins and a major decision. Fitch is 2-5.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Armanee Davis had 19 points for NFA in a 61-51 victory over Glastonbury. Camron Barboza added 14 points and Cody Jamieson had 11 for NFA (2-3), which led 26-23 at halftime and lengthened the lead to 42-32 after three quarters.

    • JJ Robinson had 34 points, five steals and three assists to lead Fitch past Newington 80-74. Fitch (5-1) went on an 8-0 run to take charge of the game late in the fourth quarter. Malakhi Sabb added 24 points and five 3-point field goals in the win.

    • Devan Williams, who scored his 1,000th career point one day before, finished with 16 points to lift New London past Mt. Pleasant (R.I.) 56-43. D’Shaun Phillips added 14 points and SaVahn Warren 11 for the Whalers (5-1).

    Girls’ basketball

    • Gemma Tonucci had 11 points for St. Bernard in a 67-36 loss to Killingly. Molly Crabtree had 19 points for Killingly. St. Bernard is 1-4.

    • Bacon Academy went on a 20-0 run during the second and third quarters to beat RHAM 50-25 Friday. Skyler Schoen-Rene had 19 points for Bacon (5-1), eight in the second quarter, and Katelyn Novak had 12. Bacon led 26-10 at halftime.

    • Katelyn Cadmus finished with 18 points in Stonington’s 46-40 loss to Westerly in the consolation game of the Westerly Community Credit Union Holiday Tournament on Friday. Westerly outscored the Bears (2-4) 10-0 over the last 4:48 of the third quarter to turn the momentum in its favor. Leah DePerry added nine points for the Bears, who led 15-9 after one quarter, and Cadmus was named to the all-tournament team.

    Women’s hockey

    • Conn College picked up its third straight win, beating Albertus Magnus 7-1 behind two goals from Claire Sammons, including a power-play goal just 6:47 into the game. Abby Munger added a goal and two assists for the Camels (5-3-1), while Sydney Cresta and Galen Kilfeather each had a goal and assist and Alana Burm, Charlotte Harris and Ashley Engle were each credited with two assists. Conn held a 2-0 lead after one period.

    Men’s basketball

    • David Murray had 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in Conn College’s 66-56 loss to Utica in the title game of the Utica Classic. Elias Espinosa had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals for Conn (9-3) and Billy Whelan came off the bench to add nine points, all from beyond the 3-point arc. Utica used a 18-2 run in the final 6:10 of the first half to seize control and led for the entirety of the second half. Conn opens NESCAC play at Tufts on Friday.
