No. 12 UConn women ready to face Georgetown; no word yet on injury to Aubrey Griffin

Things have been quiet surrounding the 12th-ranked UConn women’s basketball team this week following the potential loss of graduate forward Aubrey Griffin to a left knee injury during a win Wednesday at Creighton.

The team remained on the road prior to Sunday’s game at Georgetown (1:30 p.m., SNY) and there was no update on Griffin’s status.

“Aubrey’s had to overcome a lot,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said following the win over Creighton.

“She had one of these in high school and she missed a year at UConn because she needed back surgery. You just are heartbroken for a kid when it’s their last year and something like this happens.”

UConn (11-3 overall, 3-0 in the Big East) is in the midst of a seven-game winning streak employing a four-guard starting lineup. Former national player of the year Paige Bueckers (19.6 points per game) and Nika Muhl, who had her 500th career assist against Creighton, start along with freshman guards Ashlynn Shade and KK Arnold. They join senior forward Aaliyah Edwards (16.9 ppg., 8.6 rpg).

Griffin, averaging 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds, was injured in the third quarter against Creighton and Auriemma noted that the Creighton doctor called Griffin’s knee “very unstable.”

The Huskies, in the midst of their third straight season marred by serious injuries, including the loss of Bueckers for all of last season, have already lost Azzi Fudd, Jana El Alfy and Ayanna Patterson for the season and are without Caroline Ducharme indefinitely due to head and neck injuries.

UConn is down to nine healthy players.

“The basketball part is actually really secondary,” Auriemma said Wednesday. “I think it’s more of the rest of your teammates just knowing that you’re going to have to fight your way through this and it’s not an easy one.

“Right now we’re in a bad cycle and I think the kids are just kind of gutted out by all this, you know?”

Georgetown (12-2, 2-1) is led by 5-foot-10 senior guard Kelsey Ransom with 15.4 points per game.
