    Local roundup: New London’s Lancaster wins MVP at New York tourney

    New York — New London’s Serenity Lancaster was named the Rose Classic’s Most Valuable Player as the Whalers went 1-1 at the girls’ basketball tournament in Queens.

    Lancaster, a junior, scored 40 points with 14 rebounds and five blocked shots in an 80-45 win over Archbishop Molloy of Queens on Saturday. In Friday’s 60-49 loss to Xaverian of Brooklyn, Lancaster had 16 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and six assists.

    Ky’Ani Allgood had 16 points and 14 rebounds for New London (7-3) against Molloy, Nyarah Dudley had 14 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists, Jaidelis Rivera had eight assists and Italia Salls had seven assists.

    Against Xaverian, Rivera had 13 points and five steals, Allgood had six rebounds and Salls and Dudley scored eight points each.

    Men’s basketball

    • Cam Schainfeld and David Murray scored 16 points each as Connecticut College held on for a 64-57 win over visiting Wesleyan in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Conn never trailed in the second half but had to fight off a late comeback by the Cardinals.

    Wesleyan got within a single point with 1:13 to play, but the Camels countered with a big basket by Elias Espinosa and a clutch steal by Ben Rice to help secure the win. Espinosa had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Murray had nine rebounds and four blocks and Rice had seven rebounds for the Camels (12-4, 3-1). Shane Regan had 20 points for Wesleyan (10-5, 2-1).

    Women’s basketball

    • Alli Jones had 12 points and 20 rebounds to lead Wesleyan to a 68-50 win over Conn College in a NESCAC game. Rebecca Oberman-Levine 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks, Avery Burns scored 12 points and Addi Hunter had seven rebounds for the Camels (5-11, 0-4). Wesleyan is 9-4, 1-1.

    H.S. hockey

    • Wyatt Verbridge (Stonington), Kaden Casteel (Waterford) and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon Academy) had a goal each as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles lost 8-3 Saturday to East Haven. Drew Sager (East Lyme) added two assists and Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) had one assist for the Eagles (2-6-1), who trailed just 4-3 after two periods.

    Boys’ indoor track

    • East Lyme’s Thomas Matlock won the shot put on Saturday at the East Coast Invitational in Providence. Matlock topped his school record with a throw of 61-4.5, fourth best in the country this year. Teammate Jacky Lin was fifth in the pole vault and Jeremiah Jean was fourth in the high jump.

    • Ledyard had a pair of second-place finishes at the East Coast Invitational on Saturday. Mateo Viviano was second in the pole vault (13-0) and Christian Wiltshire was second in the high jump (6-0) while Luca Viviano was third in the pole vault (12-0).

    The 4x200 relay team of Jamel Kearse Jr., Roan Fothergill, Paulo Templeton and Patrick Scully finished third and the 4x800 team of Gabe Huff, Tony Soldato, Sean Harren and Jack Keskeny were fourth. Kearse Jr. was fourth in the long jump, Fothergill was fifth in the 200, Wiltshire was sixth in the long jump and Jackson Hill was sixth in the 2 mile run

    Girls’ indoor track

    • Ledyard’s Josie Withbroe won the 2 mile run on Saturday at the East Coast Invitational in Providence, with a time of 12:59.82. Teammate Kate Littler was third in the mile run (5:21.15) and the 4x55 shuttle hurdles relay team of Keara Opalenik, Kylie Witherill, Adelaide Culligan and Nicole Opalenik were fourth.
