    Local college roundup: Stotts lifts Coast Guard to victory

    Worcester, Mass. — Sophomore Dorothy Stotts made two free throws with two seconds left to lift the Coast Guard Academy past WPI, 62-60, on Saturday in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.

    Stotts finished with 15 points for the Bears, who improved to 17-6 overall, 6-3 in the conference.

    The Bears went just nine of 17 from the foul line overall, but Stotts delivered with the game on the line.

    Kira Wood chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and four assists while Glory Blethen added 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

    WPI fell to 11-12, 3-6.

    In other games:

    • Yasmine Santos had 22 points and eight rebounds for Mitchell College in a 72-54 loss at St. Joseph’s (Maine). Alexia Watson and Jamya Beddoe each scored 11 for the Mariners, who fell to 4-16 overall, 2-10 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Monks (16-7, 12-0) are undefeated in conference play.

    Men’s basketball

    • Coast Guard Academy fell behind by 17 at halftime and never recovered, dropping a 75-60 decision at Wheaton College in the NEWMAC. Mitch Shettles led the Bears (13-10, 6-8) with 15 points while Cameron Brown had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Declan Rooney added 11 points.

    • Mitchell College dropped to 7-16 overall, 4-8 in the GNAC with a 72-67 loss at St. Joseph’s (Maine). Jaylyn Clardy (15 points), Dontae Pollard (14), Brandon Lee (13) and Elijah Miller (13) led the Mariners. Miller added a team-high 10 rebounds and recorded his third straight double-double and Lee had six assists.

    Men’s hockey

    • Connecticut College split a pair of weekend games in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Saturday, the Camels (9-11-2, 7-8) lost to Amherst, 7-3. Logan Cleary, Cole Eichler and Rocco Testa-Besi each had a goal for Conn, which allowed five goals in the third period.

    Friday night, Jack Luca scored with 58 seconds remaining to lift Conn to a 3-2 win over Hamilton. Testa-Basi and Andrew Eberling also had goals and Sean Dynan made 23 saves for the Camels.

    • No. 12 UMass beat UConn 2-0 in a Hockey East game on Friday night. Arsenii Sergeeve made 29 saves for the Huskies (12-14-2, 7-10-1).

    Women’s hockey

    • Conn College scored two goals in the third period to force overtime against No. 8 Hamilton and ended up with a 3-3 tie in NESCAC action. Casey Godfrey, Sydney Cresta and Serena Sieple scored for the Camels (7-9-6, 2-9-3) and Claire Sammons added an assist. On Friday, Conn lost to Hamilton, 2-0. Maeve Corcoran made 15 saves for the Camels.
