Around the region

• The UConn women’s basketball team swept the weekly Big East awards, with Paige Bueckers earning player of the week honors and KK Arnold being named the league’s freshman of the week for the sixth time this season. The Huskies (26-5, 18-0), ranked 10th, will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big East tournament later this week at the Mohegan Sun Arena. They open play Saturday at noon in the quarterfinals.

• A graduate transfer, Megan Bauman (East Lyme) is a starting guard for the undefeated New York University women’s basketball team that has reached the NCAA Division III tournament Sweet Sixteen. She had six points, two assists and a rebound in a 93-59 win over DeSales Saturday in second round action in Center Valley, Pa.

On the season, Bauman is averaging 7.7 points, 4.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 26 games. Next up for top-ranked NYU (27-0) is a tournament game versus Hardin-Simmons University on Friday.

• Smith College junior Serena Britner (St. Bernard) ran a leg on the school-record setting 4x800 relay team at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston on Feb. 25. The team finished sixth in nine minutes, 32.83 seconds and earned All-New England honors. Britner also had a personal best time of 5:10.56 while finishing 14th in the mile.

• Freshmen Macy Pearse (Fitch) and Daniella Bruno (East Lyme) are freshmen members of the Salve Regina women’s lacrosse team. Bruno has two goals and two assists through three games while Pearse has appeared in one game.

Also at Salve, Hunter Yaworski (Killingly), a graduate transfer from Mitchell College, had a double and two RBI in a 14-2 win over Western New England on Feb. 25.

• At Rhode Island College, freshman goalie Giana Franco (East Lyme) made 10 saves and notched her first collegiate point with an assist in a loss to Maine-Farmington on Saturday.

• Freshman Abbie Belleville (East Lyme) scored her third goal of the season in the Endicott College women’s lacrosse team’s 14-11 win over Framingham State on Saturday. Freshman defender Kaitlyn DiLoreto (East Lyme) has appeared in all four games.

Also at Endicott, freshman Anthony Jessuck (Waterford) is a member of the baseball team’s pitching staff.

• Senior Luke Sokolski (Waterford) had a single, double and an RBI for the Plymouth State baseball team in a 14-6 loss to Bates on Sunday.

Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell College’s softball team opens the 2024 season on Saturday, playing Augsburg and Suffolk in Kissimmee, Fla., to kick-off the spring trip. Samantha Hynes will be making her collegiate coaching debut. Hailey Hill (Griswold), Sarah Aviles (Griswold), Cassandra Roman (New London) and Lola Worsdale (Stonington) are on the roster.

• Two games into the season, Xavier Haney (Montville) leads the men’s lacrosse team with three goals.

Tracking the Bears

• The Coast Guard Academy baseball team plays its 2024 opener on Wednesday afternoon at Mitchell College before heading to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for its spring break trip.

The Bears return 23 players, including junior Jack Steel who hit .324 and drove in 19 runs last season. Raymond Priddy, who went 4-3, had a team-best four saves and earned NEWMAC rookie of the year honors, is part of a deep pitching staff.

• The softball team heads to Clermont, Fla., this week to begin the 2024 season, starting off with Rowan University and Case Western University on Sunday. The Bears, who posted a 31-11 record last season, were picked to finish fourth in the preseason NEWMAC poll. They’re led by returning veterans in outfielder Christine Carey (.413) and pitcher Dana Walker (1.67 earned run average).
