    Local roundup: Mangual lifts Saints into Div. I semifinals

    Fairfield — Tyler Mangual’s basket with seven seconds remaining in overtime lifted St. Bernard to a 64-63 win over No. 3 Kolbe Cathedral on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the CIAC Division I boys’ basketball tournament.

    The No. 6 Saints (22-3) will face No. 2 Ridgefield in the semifinals on Wednesday. Ridgefield beat No. 7 Northwest Catholic 49-42. Please go to theday.com to see highlights from the game.

    Amyre Gray had 23 points and Curtis Marshall and Amare Marshall scored 13 each for the Saints. Najimi George led Kolbe with 18 points.

    • No. 14 Fairfield Ludlowe jumped out to a 21-0 and went on to beat No. 22 Waterford 70-48. The Lancers (12-13) didn’t score until there was 6:30 left in the first half.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Connecticut College picked up its first win of the season, beating host Salve Regina 19-14. Liam Horkin, Isaiah Kozub and JJ Ford had three goals each, Bobby Chang and Jack Tenzer had two goals and two assists each and Colton Lingelbach-Pierce, Graydon Diamond and Ford had two assists each for the Camels (1-2).

    Men’s tennis

    • Conn College beat Northwestern (Minn.) 9-0 in Orlando, Fla., for its first win of the spring season. Gavin Anderson, Sigmund Winiecki, Colby Hall, Andy Felman, Nikhil Agarwal and Krishh Tipniss won singles matches for the Camels (2-3).

    Women’s tennis

    • Conn College started its spring trip with an 8-1 win over Northwestern (Minn.) 8-1 in Orlando, Fla. Lily Kerachsky, Courtney Banks, Sana Bhat, Maya Kowalska, Ella Griffiths and Caroline Champa won their matches for the Camels (2-3).

    H.S. track & field

    • East Lyme’s boys’ 4x800-meter relay team was second in the emerging elite division at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York on Sunday. Jilali Benjdid, Maddox Grillo-Smith, Sam Leone and Kai Ritz finished in 8 minutes, 5.93 seconds.

    Norwich Free Academy’s Hannah Graham, who won the national championship in the emerging elite division of the girls’ weight throw on Friday (44-2.75), added a ninth-place finish in the emerging elite shot put on Sunday at 35-4.

    Women’s hockey

    • Hockey East champion UConn will face Minnesota Duluth on Thursday at Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament. The Huskies (25-7-5) earned an automatic bid by beating Northeastern in Saturday’s final to earn its first conference title.

    The national tournament field of 11 teams has seeded the top five programs and includes top seed Ohio State, defending No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 3 Colgate No. 4 Clarkson and No. 5 Minnesota. Rounding out the field are Cornell, St. Lawrence, Minnesota Duluth, Penn State, and Stonehill.
