Red Sox sign pitcher Chase Anderson

Right-hander Chase Anderson agreed to a $1.25 million, one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, one day after he was released from a minor league deal by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Anderson would get a $180,000 salary in the event he is assigned to the minor leagues. He could earn $500,000 in performance bonuses in the major leagues for innings: $50,000 for 100, $100,000 for 115, $150,000 for 130 and $200,000 for 145.

Anderson, 36, was 1-6 with a 5.75 ERA last year in 17 starts and two relief appearances for Tampa Bay and Colorado.

He signed with the Pirates on Feb. 17 and had a 2.45 ERA in four spring training outings with nine strikeouts and three walks while holding batters to a .135 batting average (5 for 37).

Anderson is 59-56 with a 4.35 ERA and one save in 10 seasons over 200 starts and 18 relief appearances in 10 seasons with Arizona (2014-15), Milwaukee (2016-19), Toronto (2020), Philadelphia (2021), Cincinnati (2022), the Rays and Rockies.

To open a roster spot, Boston placed right-hander Lucas Giolito on the 60-day injured list. Giolito is expected to miss the season after his right ulnar collateral ligament was repaired with an internal brace.

    Yankees LeMahieu on the IL

New York Yankees leadoff hitter DJ LeMahieu will start the season on the injured list because of a bruised right foot, the latest injury setback for the former batting champion.

The 35-year-old third baseman has been sidelined since fouling a ball off the foot on March 16. He is expected to miss at least the seven-game trip that starts Thursday at Houston.

"It's a little bit slow go on the recovery side," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday. "He banged it up pretty good."

An MRI and CT scan last week were both negative. Cashman said there will be a follow-up MRI this week.

LeMahieu was slowed the past two seasons by an injured right toe.

Gleyber Torres will get time as the leadoff hitter against left-handers, while Alex Verdugo will top the order against right-handers. Oswaldo Cabrera could fill in at third.

Verdugo started in left field in Monday's exhibition against the New York Mets. He was scheduled to make the trip with a split squad to Mexico City but was scratched because his pregnant girlfriend needed to go to a hospital.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo was the designated hitter against the Mets after missing three days with a sore lat. He expects to be back at first on Thursday.

Rizzo went 0 for 2. He took a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch from Seam Manaea to complete a seven-pitch at-bat in the first and lined out to second during the fourth against the left-hander.

Rizzo was limited to 99 games by injuries last year and ended the season sidelined by post-concussion syndrome. He played for the final time on Aug. 1

"Opening day is a special day." Rizzo said. "You can't take it for granted. It means a lot to be on the field."

Verdugo grounded out twice, had an RBI fielder's choice, and made a nifty diving catch on Brett Baty's fifth-inning fly ball.

Minor league infielder Jorbit Vivas was scratched due to a facial bruise that occurred during pregame work. The Yankees' medical staff found no concussion symptoms and Vivas went to a hospital for evaluation.

    Mets to honor Bud Harrelson

The New York Mets will wear tribute patches on the sleeves of their uniforms this year in honor of the late Bud Harrelson.

New York said Monday the patches will feature Harrelson's No. 3 and "BUDDY." The Mets said the side of the sleeve with the patch will vary depending on whether a player is right-handed or left-handed.

The shortstop died on Jan. 10 at age 79 after being stricken with Alzheimer's disease. He was a player on the Mets' 1969 World Series champions and a coach for the 1986 championship team. Harrelson played for the Mets from 1965-77 and managed the team in 1990 and '91.

His six grandchildren will take part in a ceremonial first pitch ceremony before Thursday's opener.

Pillar gets new deal with White Sox

Outfielder Kevin Pillar's one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox calls for a $1 million salary while in the major leagues and $180,000 while assigned to the minors.

Pillar could earn $500,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $50,000 for 150 and each additional 25 through 375.

Pillar was in camp on a minor league deal that called for a $3 million salary if added to the 40-man roster but he was cut on Friday. Chicago announced on Sunday that it had agreed to a big league deal with the 35-year-old.

Pillar played for Atlanta last year, hitting .228 with nine homers and 32 RBIs in 81 games.

Chicago also agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Robbie Grossman.
