    Local roundup: George, Tacchini lead Coast Guard offense in win over Albertus

    New London — Blake George and John Tacchini each had three hits for the Coast Guard Academy baseball team in a 15-9 win over Albertus Magnus on Wednesday afternoon.

    After Nathan Stafford gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first inning, Tacchini added a solo homer in the second. Coast Guard (7-5) added four runs in the fourth, including an RBI double by George, four in the sixth and five in the seventh.

    Ryan Karman pitched three innings of no-hit relief to earn the victory for the Bears.

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College junior Chris Gibbs turned in a dominant pitching performance over Lasell on Tuesday, giving up one run over eight innings ball to power the Mariners to a 6-1 victory. Gibbs allowed four hits and struck out two to improve his record to 4-0 for the Mariners, who have won three straight to open play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Owen Robbins (East Lyme) finished 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Cole Calli added a double and a pair of RBI, freshman Chas Terni Jr. (Montville) drove in a run on a base hit and Angel Galindez picked up two hits and two runs. Jacob Quiles worked a scoreless ninth in relief of Gibbs. The Mariners are 11-6 overall.

    • Spencer Stahl went 5-for-5 and Roman Hausmann was 3-for-3 with five RBI in UConn Avery Point’s 19-0 win Tuesday over Holyoke Community College. Ben Centurelli earned the victory for the Pointer, striking out five.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Conn College never trailed en route to a 14-8 nonconference victory over Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Silfen Field. Liam Horkan led all scorers with six goals to pace the Camels (2-4). Will Rice finished with 10 saves in goal.

    College honors

    • Conn College had two men’s basketball players and four women’s basketball players earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

    Senior Billy Whelan and junior Cam Schainfeld were honored on the men’s side, with Whelan earning the distinction for the second straight year.

    Women’s players honored were seniors Rebecca Oberman-Levine and Aislinn McMahon and sophomores Hallie O’Toole and Avery Burns.

    To be an Academic All-District honoree, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore at their institution, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above, and have played at least 90% or started 66% of their team's games.

    UConn football Spring Fan Fest

    • UConn football will its Spring Fan Fest on Sunday, April 21, at Joe Morrone Stadium on the Storrs campus. The event will be free of charge and will feature tailgating opportunities, an exclusive open house for season ticket holders, fan fest games and attractions, a preview of the 2024 UConn football team and an opportunity to meet the student-athletes and coaching staff.

    Free tickets will be available to claim in early April at UConnTickets.com. Fans who attend the Spring Fan Fest will receive a special buy-one, get-one free electronic ticket offer for the upcoming 2024 home schedule.

    Fans are encouraged to arrive early as I Lot East and West will be available for tailgating prior to the event. The lots will open at 10 a.m. Spaces are available to all fans on a first-come, first-served basis. Fans are required to adhere to UConn on-campus tailgating policies.

    Gates to Morrone Stadium will open at 12:30 p.m., at which time concessions, giveaways, inflatables, face painters and lawn games will be available.

    Practice will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature situational drills, offense and defense positional breakouts and team-oriented segments. Practice is expected to last for approximately 60 minutes.

    At the conclusion of practice, fans will be invited to join the team on the field for a meet and greet session including autograph and photo opportunities.
