Waterford — Dylan Matis allowed one run on four hits over four innings, striking out five, to lift the Waterford High School baseball team to a 6-1 win over Lyman Memorial on Thursday.

Nick Ingraham singled and scored twice for Waterford (4-1). Alex Ortiz doubled twice for Lyman (3-2) and Jeremiah Bobbi had two hits and a run scored.

In other games:

• Freshman Conner Gallagher pitched a complete-game shutout for St. Bernard in a 4-0 victory over Griswold at Dodd Stadium. Gallagher, making his first varsity appearance, allowed three hits, striking out three. Martin Light had three hits, including a double, for the Saints (2-1) and Colin O’Leary and Desmond Powers each had a double and an RBI. Colin Mitchell and Calvin Oddo had hits for Griswold (3-2).

• Ryan Cleary had a single and a double for Norwich Free Academy in a 10-4 loss to unbeaten Enfield. NFA is 2-2, Enfield 6-0.

H.S. softball

• Jillian Fugere homered twice and added a single and three RBI in Fitch’s 18-2 victory over Ledyard. Zoe Cosmopoulos was 4-for-4 with three RBI and Maerin Lyon and Grace Cosmopoulos had three hits each for the Falcons (1-1). Hailey Merrill pitched a four-hitter over five innings and also added two hits for Fitch. Ledyard is 1-2.

• Natalie Knowlton and Grace DuBrava each hit a grand slam for East Lyme in a 14-1 victory over RHAM which lasted five innings due to the mercy rule. Kinzie Donahue doubled and Abby Robinson pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Vikings (2-2), who led 12-0 after three innings.

• Brielle Kenney struck out eight and walked none and added a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Waterford in an 8-1 victory over Chariho. Emila Podeszwa added a three-run homer for the Lancers (4-1) and Melanie Martin had two hits. The game was tied 1-1 going to the bottom of the fifth when Waterford, backed by Podeszwa’s blast, scored four runs.

H.S. boys’ lacrosse

• Ethan Mahoney had three goals and Nathan Mahoney two goals and one assist as Stonington remained unbeaten with a 9-4 victory over Lewis Mills. Tyler Simao added a goal and an assist and Kyle Olsson, Maclan Griscom and Logan Cristina had one goal each. Andrew Whitman made eight saves for the Bears (4-0), who led 6-4 at the half.

• Logan Jenkins had six goals and an assist for NFA in a 14-7 loss to Conard. Conor Gaughan added a goal and three assists and Gavin Jenkins had an assist for the Wildcats (3-2). Liam Alver had six goals and three assists for Conard (3-0).

• Cortland Ruggiero had two goals and Nick Favaloro had one for Ledyard/Griswold in a 21-3 loss to East Catholic. Ledyard/Griswold is 0-4.

H.S. girls’ lacrosse

• Tatianna Irizarry had five goals and four assists to lead Ledyard in a 16-4 victory over Killingly. Maddie McLeod and Helena Robinson each had four goals for the Colonels (1-2), which got a big game from the defensive line of Jess Dudley, Baileigh Johnson, Rylee Hope and Emma Sonia Henry Ortiz. Mackenzie Boyer had a goal and three assists and Kaitlyn Sweeney and Tiana Winkelman each scored their first varsity goal. Lorelai England made eight saves in goal, including the 300th of her career.

• Simsbury’s Madeline Francis scored five goals in a 14-3 victory Wednesday over Stonington. Emma Logel had two goals and Abby Mayorga had one for Stonington (2-3). Logel leads the Bears with 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points.

H.S. boys’ golf

• Manu Geronimo shot a team-best 48 for Old Lyme in a 178-208 loss to Cromwell at Black Hall. Cromwell’s Dillon Rozich was the medalist with an even-par 35. It was the season-opening match for Old Lyme.

H.S. volleyball

• Norwich Tech lost to Woodstock 3-1 on Wednesday. The Centaurs won 24-26, 25-18, 29-27, 25-17. Bradley Martell had 14 kills and six digs, Emerson Avery had 18 digs and Angel Garcia had 11 assists, seven digs and three aces for Norwich Tech (2-3).

College baseball

• Cole Lalli had two home runs, one double, five RBI and four runs scored, leading Mitchell College past Hartford 15-6. Lalli's first home run was a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the second inning. The senior added another solo blast to left field in the bottom of the sixth, and in between laced a bases-clearing double down the left field line. Jack Hayes added his first home run of the season for the Mariners (18-8, 7-0 GNAC), while Chas Terni Jr. of Montville and Michael Gajda doubled.

• Freshman Dan Lang was the winning pitcher and Liam Chamberlain earned his first save of the season as UConn Avery Point beat rival CCRI 8-7 on Wednesday. John Bureau of East Lyme had two hits, including a double, and Ben Schultz reached base four times, delivering the game-tying hit in the seventh inning.

Men’s lacrosse

• Nick McLaughlin and Lorenzo Vogliano each recorded two goals and an assist to pace Conn College in a 14-8 loss to No. 16 Amherst on Wednesday night from Silfen Field. JJ Ford also tacked on two goals for the Camels (3-6, 1-6 NESCAC), while Liam Horkan and Aidan McAvoy added one goal each.

Sun name Newton as athletic trainer

• The WNBA’s Connecticut Sun announced the hiring of Ryan Newton as the team’s head athletic trainer and physical therapist.

Newton joins the Sun after serving a year in the MLS as Real Salt Lake’s assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist. Prior to his time in Utah, Newton spent 6-plus years in general sports medicine and performance, with experience ranging across the NFL and WNBA as a member of the New England Patriots’ and Indiana Fever’s support staffs.

"I am ecstatic to be returning to the WNBA to an organization with a competitive and supportive culture,“ Newton said. ”I am eager to actively take part in raising the standard of care for the amazing athletes in the WNBA with a staff that wants nothing less.“
