Around the region

• Emma Marelli (Waterford) is enjoying a terrific sophomore season with the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team. She’s tied for the team lead in batting average at .403, ranks first in runs scored (24), hits (29) and doubles (eight) while starting all 22 games. She also has 16 RBI, second best on the team.

In Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Keene State, Marelli had five hits, including two doubles, three RBI and scored two runs.

Also at Eastern, junior pitcher Dan Driscoll (Waterford) owns a 3-1 record with a 4.21 earned run average. He’s allowed 38 hits in 36.1 innings, striking out 53 and walking 11 for the Warriors who enter this week’s action 21-6 overall, 8-1 in the Little East Conference.

Junior Sean Ventresca (Montville), junior Oliver Searle (Waterford), freshman Josh Conn (Griswold), junior Cody Brown (Waterford) are members of the men’s lacrosse team.

Freshman Grace Saldana (Bacon Academy), freshman Neely Hart (Bacon) and sophomore Madison Corbeil (Fitch) have helped the women’s lacrosse team off to a 3-0 start in Little East play. Hart has a goal and six assists while Corbeil and Saldana have one goal apiece.

• Senior pitcher Jared Burrows (Waterford) is contributing to the Bryant University baseball team’s success. In 13 appearances out of the bullpen, Burrows is 3-3 with a 2.16 earned run average in 16.2 innings of work for the Bulldogs (22-11). He has one save.

• Junior pitcher Connor Podeszwa (Waterford) has appeared in seven games for the Tufts baseball team, starting six. He’s 1-3 with a 6.75 earned run average, striking out 39 in 32 innings.

Also at Tufts, senior Sophia DiCocco (Norwich Free Academy) has a career-low 0.53 earned run average through 17 appearances. DiCocco is 9-4 with 53 strikeouts and 16 walks in 79.2 innings for the Jumbos (22-5). She was honored during Senior Day festivities before Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Middlebury.

• Sarah Christensen (East Lyme), a graduate defender on the nationally-ranked York (Pa.) College women’s lacrosse team, recently earned MAC Commonwealth defensive player of the week honors. In a 20-6 win over Alvernia on Wednesday, Christensen had a career-high 14 draw controls, which also ties the second most in a game in program history.

• At St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, N.Y., junior guard Sarah Ericson (NFA), was a First Team All-East Region selection in Division II. Ericson helped lead the women’s basketball team to a third straight East Coast Conference postseason trip. She averaged 16 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists and received all-conference first team honors.

• Central Connecticut State University freshman Payton Lowe (St. Bernard) had a personal best throw of 37.37 meters in the discus at the UConn Northeast Challenge last weekend in Storrs. She placed 14th overall.

In men’s track, CCSU graduate runner Samuel Whittaker (East Lyme) competed at his alma mater, Bucknell, last weekend in the Bison Open, placing seventh in the 1,500 with a time of three minutes, 48.35 seconds.

• Senior Rachel Miller (Waterford) went 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Southern Connecticut State University softball team in a 10-2 loss to Saint Anselm on Saturday. Miller has a team-high .341 batting average and also leads the team in RBI with 16 and hits with 29.

• Luke Sokolski (Waterford), a senior outfielder, has had at least one hit in all but one game for the Plymouth University baseball team. Through 14 games, he’s batting team-best .460 with three home runs and nine RBI. He also leads Plymouth with 23 hits.

• Freshman goalie Giana Franco (East Lyme) made 10 saves for her first career win in the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team’s 12-3 over Purchase on April 8.

• Freshman midfielder Abbie Belleville (East Lyme) has 11 goals and two assists for the Endicott College women’s lacrosse team. Freshman defender Kaitlyn DiLoreto (East Lyme) has played in five games.

Mariners riding a wave

• The Mitchell College baseball team has a half-game lead over second-place Johnson & Wales in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference standings entering this week’s action. The Mariners (20-8, 9-0) will visit Johnson & Wales (18-6, 9-1) for a doubleheader Saturday in Providence.

The game will feature two of the top run-producers in the league in Mitchell’s Cole Lalli and Riley Hasson of Johnson & Wales. They are tied for first in RBI at 35 apiece.

• On the softball diamond, Mitchell is undefeated in conference play at 4-0, trailing only Johnson & Wales (6-0) in the standings. Junior Brooke Whitmarsh is first on the team in batting average (.364) and second in RBI with 24 while junior Gemma Landry is second in batting average at .339 and first in RBI with 27.

Tracking the Bears

• The Coast Guard Academy baseball team resides in fourth place in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference heading into this week’s action. The Bears (15-7, 5-2) own the second best team batting average in the league at 323. Freshman Nathan Stafford is leading the way with a team-best .420 average overall.

• Sophomore midfielder Abby McAllister is first in the NEWMAC in assists with 36, eight more than the next women’s lacrosse player, and also first in points per game at 5.75. She has 33 goals in 12 games for the Bears (9-4, 4-3). Junior midfielder Caitlyn Coates has a team-best 42 goals.

Camel highlights

• The Connecticut College women’s lacrosse team is sitting at 7-6 overall, 2-6 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with two regular games to go. Sophomore attack Kate Coughlin ranks first on the team in goals (32) and points (40) while junior midfielder Aine Downey is first in assists (15) to go with 24 goals for a total of 39 points overall.
