    Local roundup: Wheeler opens its golf season with a pair of wins

    Stonington — Wheeler, the defending Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV boys’ golf champions, opened its season with a pair of wins.

    The Lions beat Stonington 5.5-1.5 and Fitch 6-1. Wheeler freshman Jaxon Davis was the medalist with 4-over-par 40 at Stonington Country Club.

    Tyler Signor and Cameron Conway had 42s, Keiran Boscoe shot a 45 and Gavin Arruda shot 48. Stonington (0-2) was led by Ethan Torres (42), Seamus Doyle (45), Sam Olmstead (46) and Dane Yaworsky (48). Fitch (1-2) was led by Charlie Bergendahl (44), Cole Faulkner (49) and Gianni Drab (50).

    In other matches:

    • Grasso Tech lost to Ellis Tech 175-185. Nathan Sylvestre (41) of Grasso (1-3) was the medalist.

    • Tyler Moore was the medalist with a two-over-par 37 as East Lyme defeated Old Lyme 160-226 on Wednesday at Black Hall. Jack Bucko added a 39 for East Lyme (2-0), Sebby DeCosta a 41 and Max Weston a 43. Manu Geronimo shot a team-best 46 for Old Lyme (0-3).

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning ans beat Coast Guard 8-7. The game was called after eight innings due to rain. Adam Vartanian, Angel Galindez, Michael Ficocelli and Jack Hayes had two hits each for Mitchell (22-8).

    John Carroll was 3-for-3, Luke Percifield had two hits and scored three runs and John Tacchini and Nathan Stafford drove in two runs each for Coast Guard (16-8).

    H.S. boys’ track

    • Elliot Childs won the 110 hurdles (14.9), 300 hurdles (42.9) and triple jump 38-6 as Waterford edged Bacon Academy 75-74 Wednesday in an ECC Division II meet. Titus Olsen added victories in the 800 and 1,600 for the Lancers (1-0, 1-0), while Liam Sweeney won the shot put and the discus for Bacon (0-2, 0-1).

    • Colin Britner won the 400 (54.1), 3,200 (10:55) and high jump (5-4) as St. Bernard swept a tri-meet Wednesday, beating Norwich Tech 118-18 and Putnam 118-23. Oakely Garrison (100, 200), Theodore Burrell (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Zane Baton (shot put, discus) also won two events each for the Saints (2-0). Matthew Benjamin won the long jump for Norwich Tech (1-1), which defeated Putnam 84-34.

    H.S. girls’ track

    • Freshman Lily Davis won the 100 (13.4), 200 (28.2), 400 (1:03) and ran a leg of the first-place 4x400 relay Wednesday as Waterford defeated Bacon Academy 80-70 in an ECC Division II meet. Elle Dibuono (800, long jump) won two events for Waterford (1-0, 1-0), while Zoe Carlson (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Ashleen Walsh (discus, javelin) won two events for Bacon (0-2, 0-1).

    • Uliana Pokutnia (100, 200) and Olivia Mayorga (800, 1,600) each won two individual events and contributed to a relay victory Wednesday as St. Bernard opened the season with a sweep in a tri-meet against Norwich Tech (126-6) and Putnam (108-26). Norwich Tech defeated Putnam 51-40. Pokutnia was part of the winning 4x100 relay along with Vanessa Colla, Maeve Suprenant and Morghan Kuhn, while Mayorga ran a leg of the winning 4x400 along with Morghan Kuhn, Caitlyn Kuhn and Abbey Egan.

    • Hannah Graham won the shot put and the discus for Norwich Free Academy in a 102-47 victory over Fitch in an ECC Division I meet Wednesday. Sofia Ayer and Paige Brayman each ran on two winning relays (4x400, 4x800) for the Wildcats (2-0). Hannah Thomas won both hurdles events for Fitch (1-1).

    Men’s lacrosse

    • JJ Ford recorded a hat trick to lead Conn College in a 10-8 loss to Trinity on Wednesday at Silfen Field. Lorenzo Vogliano and Bobby Chang added two goals each for Conn and Will Rice made 13 saves. Trinity built a 10-4 lead with 13:32 left in the fourth quarter and held off the Camels down the stretch, picking up its sixth straight win. Conn is 4-7 overall, 1-7 NESCAC.

    H.S. softball

    • Janiya Aleman’s RBI double in the seventh inning lifted Stonington to a 4-3 win over Montville in an ECC Division III game on Wednesday. Ari Scavello was 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and two runs scored and Chloe Miner and Michaela Miner had two hits each for the Bears (7-0, 2-0).

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • New London picked up a pair of ECC Division III wins, beating Lyman Memorial 5-2 on Wednesday and St. Bernard/Wheeler 5-2 on Tuesday. Niko Churis and Sergio Garcia won both of their matches for the Whalers (2-1, 2-1).
