    Local roundup: Bears pile it on in the fifth for win over Falcons in softball

    Groton —​ Stonington scored five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI triple from Melanie Verbridge, in a 6-4 victory over Fitch in a high school softball game Wednesday at Washington Park.

    Michaela Miner had three hits, Chloe Miner and Sophia Dutra two hits each and Lindsey Houle was the winning pitcher for Stonington (11-2). Hailey Merrill and Jillian Fugere each had two hits for Fitch (4-5).

    In other games:

    • Maegan Miller was 4-for-4 for Ledyard in an 8-3 victory over Wheeler. Lexi Lemmon struck out eight and walked two to earn the victory for the Colonels (9-3) and also hit a two-run home run. Reese Main and Morgyn Perkins each had two hits for Wheeler (6-3), with Perkins connecting for her first career home run in the sixth inning.

    • Anabelle Wenzel struck out nine, allowing six hits, for St. Bernard in a 9-0 victory over Putnam in five innings. Wenzel also had two hits, three RBI and a run scored for the Saints (5-6) and Sunny Rangel, Helena Coury and Angelica Tompkins added two hits each.

    • Emma Bayor (three innings) and Sybil Neary (two innings) combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter for Old Lyme in a 19-1 victory over Old Saybrook/Westbrook. Ava Roth, Anna Eichholz and Grace Osborne each had three hits for Old Lyme (10-1 overall, 9-0 Shoreline Conference), while Neary and Bayor each added a three-run homer.

    ​• Autumn Hanks pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and Khai Maldonado was 4-for-5 with four runs scored in Norwich Tech’s 18-2 victory over Grasso Tech in a five-inning Connecticut Technical Conference game. Carden Stimson added three hits and three runs scored for Norwich Tech (6-7). Grasso Tech is 0-7.

    H.S. baseball

    • Nate Virtue and Mark McBride each had two hits for Fitch in an 8-7 victory over Old Lyme, with Donte Valentine earning the win for the Falcons, striking out six and walking three. Rowen Meisner was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead Old Lyme (5-7). Fitch is also 5-7.

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Tucker Callahan, Brady O’Neil, Matthew Turrisi and Peter Schoenecker won singles matches in straight sets in Stonington’s 7-0 victory over St. Bernard/Wheeler. Chase Donnarummo and Sam Lund won at No. 1 doubles for the Bears (12-0). St. Bernard/Wheeler is 3-8.

    • New London swept the doubles matches in a 5-2 victory over Grasso Tech to record the seventh straight win for the Whalers. In singles, New London’s Niko Churis and Adnel Torres earned wins, while doubles wins came from the teams of Alexander Churis-Jhandel Marichal, Jamal Charles-Jayden Gomez and Kaleb McCalla-Sergio Garcia. Sebastian Canty and Juan Bulted won singles matches in straight sets for Grasso (2-4). New London is 7-1.

    • Christos Matsas, Ian Balfour, Quinn LeBelle and Colton Murch won singles matches in straight sets to lead Waterford past Montville 7-0. The Lancers (8-2) also picked up wins from the doubles teams of Louis Dhervilly-Adam Balfour, Andrew Bertrand-Arthur Dhervilly and Alister Haglund-Jayden Compisi. Montville is 8-4.

    • Sebastian Fieldsend, Malloch Allison, Clark Ysewyn and Ben Wolford won singles matches for Ledyard in a 7-0 victory over Norwich Free Academy in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II. Andy Olczak and Gavin Westkott won their No. 3 doubles match in three sets to highlight a doubles sweep. Ledyard is 6-4 overall, 4-0 in the division. NFA is 0-11, 0-5.

    • Jonathan Patton, Emilia Leeming, Emily Smith, Sadie Rotolo and Will Corkhill all won singles matches for The Williams School in a match with the Eagle School in Hardwick, Massachusetts.

    H.S. girls’ tennis

    • Old Lyme’s Katherine Zhang won in three sets at No. 2 singles and the Wildcats edged Valley Regional 4-3. Old Lyme (12-0) also got singles wins from Elaina Morosky at No. 1 and Emma Arelt at No. 3 and from the No. 1 doubles team of Aggie and Beatrice Hunt.

    • Anna Beauchene, Allie Kondash, Jess Hochdorfer and Kelly Chen earned singles wins for Montville in a 5-2 victory over New London in ECC Divison II. Angi Liu and Fiona Liu won their doubles match for the Wolves (4-4, 3-1). The doubles teams of Nysa Agathos-Lillian Clark and Addison Hurd- Nyasia Anthony each won in three sets for New London (1-7, 0-4).

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • Wheeler’s Keiran Boscoe shot an even-par 37 to lead Wheeler past Griswold 7-0 at River Ridge Golf Course. Jaxson Davis shot 41 for Wheeler (7-0) and Gennaro Lavado fired a 41 to lead Griswold (3-2).

    H.S. girls’ golf

    • East Lyme defeated Woodstock Academy 225-233 at Quinnatesset Golf Course. East Lyme was led by Mia Williamson (51) and Georgia Anglin (53). Woodstock’s Reagan Scheck was the medalist with a (47).

    • Mia Belcamino shot a 47 to lift Bacon Academy past Stonington 217-222 at Chanticlair Golf Course. Adilyn Risley was the medalist with a 46 for Stonington. Both teams are 1-4 overall and in the ECC.

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Griffin Neal scored three goals as Waterford beat NFA 10-3 in an ECC Division I game on Tuesday night. Johan Deon had two goals and an assist, Ben Dubicki scored twice, Ethan Stelik and Avery Bonewicz had a goal and an assist each and JT Secchiaroli had an assist for the Lancers (3-7, 2-3).

    H.S. girls’ lacrosse

    ​• Molly Page had three goals for NFA in a 12-8 loss to Hamden. Hayleigh Young and Alice Rourke each finished with two goals and an assist and Leah Burchman had two goals for NFA (6-4).

    • Sienna Caron had six goals and an assist as Griswold/Norwich Tech beat Woodstock 14-8 on Tuesday. Neiara Myrick had four goals, Amelia Hawkins scored twice and Brooke Valentine and Ella Brown had a goal each for the Wolverines (3-7).

    College baseball

    • Avery Point extended its winning streak to seven with a doubleheader sweep of Massasoit on Tuesday night. The Pointers (16-12) won the opener 11-5 and the second game 16-3 in five innings.

    Dan Lang pitched a complete game for the win in the opener and Will Estronza had two hits and scored three runs. New London’s Derrel Mitchell went the distance in Game 2 for the win. Riley Carew singled, doubled and homered with four RBI.
