High school roundup: East Lyme, NFA set for ECC Division I softball final
Griswold — East Lyme High School’s Grace DuBrava homered in the eighth inning Wednesday to lift the No. 4 East Lyme High School softball team past No. 1 Waterford 2-1 in the semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament.
That advanced the Vikings (16-6) to the championship game to meet No. 2 Norwich Free Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday at Griswold High School after NFA edged No. 3 Fitch, also by a 2-1 margin.
East Lyme trailed 1-0 headed to the seventh, forcing extra innings when Natalie Knowlton tripled and scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Avery Stadler. Abby Roninson pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 for East Lyme.
Waterford (15-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Charlotte Jessuck was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error. Ava Waddington had three hits for the Lancers.
In other games:
• Amelia Driscoll drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly and also had a single and a run scored for No. 2 NFA in a 2-1 win over No. 3 Fitch in the semifinals of the ECC Division I tournament. Madison Waltke and Melainey Tackling each had two hits for NFA (13-8) and Hailey Smith pitched a complete game for the victory. Jillian Fugere was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Fitch (11-11), which defeated NFA twice during the regular season.
• No. 4 Montville defeated No. 1 Wheeler 11-2 in the ECC Division II tournament semifinals to earn a championship berth against No. 6 St. Bernard, which defeated No. 2 Stonington 6-2. That game will be played at 3 p.m. Thursday at Griswold High School.
Montville (13-9) scored six runs in the decisive fifth inning. Isabella Deledda was 3-for-4 with a double for Wheeler (14-5).
On Tuesday, Izzy Mitchell was 4-for-5 with five RBI as Montville beat No. 5 Lyman Memorial 17-13 in the first round of the tournament. Payton Jones homered, singled and drove in five runs and Amanda Corrice had two hits for the Wolves. Rylee Benway was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for Lyman (7-14).
• Maya Stimson and Evelyn Brimmer each had three hits in Norwich Tech’s 17-10 victory over Ellis Tech in the semifinals of the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament. Winning pitcher Autumn Hanks added two hits, including a triple, three runs scored and two RBI and Diana Kozerefski had two doubles and three RBI. top-seeded Norwich Tech (15-7) will meet No. 2 O’Brien Tech in the championship game at noon Friday at Albertus Magnus.
• Alina Skrabacz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in New London’s 14-2 loss to Coginchaug. Alanna Noonan had a hit and an RBI for the Whalers (5-13) and Amaya Outler had a hit and a run.
• Ledyard coach Steve Smith resigned from his position Wednesday after three seasons. The Colonels finished the season Tuesday with a 7-0 loss to East Lyme in the quarterfinals of the ECC Division I tournament. In an email to coaches, athletic directors, umpires and media, Smith cited “family, personal and private issues.” “You are all wonderful people and wonderful coaches,” Smith said. “I wish you all the best.”
Boys’ golf
• Kieran Boscoe shot a 2-over-par 37 for Wheeler in a 7-0 victory over New London at Great Neck Country Club. Tyler Signor (40), Jaxon Davis (41), Gavin Arruda (45) and Cameron Conway (41) also won matches for Wheeler (14-0). Reuben Marshall shot a 67 for New London (0-10).
• Grasso Tech’s Ian Main was the medalist with a 41 in a tri-match for the Eagles at Stanley Golf Course. Goodwin Tech won the match with 189 strokes, followed by Grasso with 196 and Wolcott Tech with 203.
• Bacon Academy’s Alex Gallardo fired a 36 to earn medalist honors in the Bobcats’ 169-171 win over Griswold at Chanticlair. John Ceruti added a 37 for Bacon, while Griswold was by Cooper Wilson with a 37 and Gennaro Lavado with a 38.
• Logan Rawson shot a 32 for Woodstock Academy to earn medalist honors in a 5-2 victory over Waterford at Great Neck Country Club. Lucas Vincenti fired a 35 to lead Waterford (3-11) and Ethan Haynes shot a 39.
