    H.S. roundup: NFA wins Connecticut Volleyball League tournament

    Hartford — The Norwich Free Academy boys’ volleyball team beat Wolcott Tech 3-2 in the final of the Connecticut Volleyball League tournament on Thursday.

    NFA won the fifth and deciding set 15-5. NFA won the opener 25-20, Wolcott Tech rallied for a 2-1 lead with 30-28 and 25-20 wins before NFA evened it with a 28-26 win in the fourth set.

    Alec Ferland had 60 assists and three kills, Tyler McDermott had 31 kills, six blocks and 13 digs, Gage Hinkley had 24 kills, 15 digs and two aces, Bryan Contreras had 30 digs and Keegan Johnston had 11 kills and 14 digs for the Wildcats (18-4).

    Baseball

    • Top seed Lyman Memorial beat No. 4 Wheeler 4-3 in an ECC Division II tournament semifinal at Mitchell College. Alex Ortiz was 3-for-3, Owen Masse had two hits and Jared Russo had a single and an RBI triple for the Bulldogs (17-5). Russo also pitched the final inning for a save, striking out three.

    Lyman plays Stonington in the final on Friday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich at 6:30 p.m.

    Kyle Kessler, James Main, Sean Bergel and Bradin Anderson had two hits each for the Lions (15-6). Main had a triple, Bergel doubled and Kessler scored twice.

    • No. 3 Stonington beat No. 2 Griswold 12-1 in an ECC Division II tournament semifinal at Mitchell College. The game ended after six innings on a mercy rule.

    Aaron LoPresto pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and a walk for the win. Alex DePerry had two hits and three RBI and Austen Linicus had two hits, two RBI and scored twice for the Bears (13-8). Jace Wolfradt had a triple and Michael Keefe, DePerry and Linicus had doubles. KinKade Rubino scored a run and Sean Garvin drove in a run for Griswold (14-8).

    Girls track & field

    • Chase Gilbert won the 800 (2:22.09) and the 1,600 (5:10.66) and Zoe Eastman-Grossel took the 100 hurdles (15.16) and 300 hurdles (46.57) as the Old Lyme girls’ track team finished fourth with 99 points Wednesday at the Shoreline Conference championship meet at Portland. East Hampton finished first with 136 points. Adding wins for Old Lyme were Margaret Thuma in the discus (104-8) and Serena Mazzi in the long jump (16-5.5).

    The 4x400 relay team of Kate Walsh, Gabby Field, Mazzi and Gilbert finished second with a new school record of 4:13.25. Mazzi also finished second in the 100 (13.09) and third in the 200 (26.45). Tabitha Colwell was third in thr triple jump (30-8 ) and Walsh was third in the 800 (2:27.90).

    Boys’ track & field

    • Old Lyme’s Jacob Volkerts won the 100 meters in 10.96 seconds and the Old Lyme boys’ team finished sixth at the Shoreline Conference championship meet with 51 points. Haddam-Killingworth won the team title with 142.5 points.

    Patrick Lynch was second in the long jump (19-1) and the 4x100 team of Trevor Buyos, Lynch, Marco Gonzaga and Volkerts finished third in 44.94 , breaking the school record set in 1974.

    Boys’ golf

    • Bacon Academy beat Stonington 164-165 in an ECC Division II match. Alex Gallardo of Bacon (7-6, 3-1) was the medalist with a 35 and teammate John Ceruti shot a 40. Sam Olmsted led Stonington (6-10, 2-4) with a 38.

    • Medalist Gianni Drab won his match with a 40 in Fitch’s 169-185 loss to Old Saybrook at Fenwick Golf Course on Wednesday. Jack Barie (48) also won his match for the Falcons.

    • Stonington lost to Killingly 6.5-0.5 in an ECC Division II match on Wednesday. Ethan Torres shot a 43 and halved his match for the Bears (6-9, 2-3).

    Softball

    • No. 6 St. Bernard beat No. 2 Stonington in an ECC Division II tournament semifinal on Wednesday. Sunny Rangel and Aubree Nygaard had two hits each, Katie Scribner was the winning pitcher and Anabelle Wenzel drove in two runs for the Saints (11-10). Shelby Mayo was 3-for-3 and Cami Brown had two hits for Stonington (15-6).
