    High school roundup: Norwich Tech outslugs O’Brien Tech for CTC softball honors

    New Haven — Morgan Cook and Nani Garcia had three hits each as the Norwich Tech softball team outslugged O’Brien Tech 14-13 Friday to win the Connecticut Technical Conference championship at Albertus Magus College.

    Cook had a triple, four RBI and two runs scored for Norwich Tech (16-7), Garcia had a double and three runs scored and Khai Maldonado had a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.

    Winning pitcher Autumn Hanks had two hits and Maya Stimson and Nyomi Barboza each scored twice.

    Nyana Torres had two doubles and a homer for O’Brien Tech.

    Boys’ tennis

    • Benny Wu won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets, 7-6 (8), 6-4), as No. 10 Montville edged No. 7 Woodland 4-3 in the first round of the Class S state tournament. Danny Zhong, Ryan Yang and Darren Chen also won matches to complete a singles sweep for Montville (12-6). The Wolves moved on to the quarterfinals to take on No. 2-seeded Stonington on Tuesday.

    • Second-seeded Stonington began its title defense in the Class S state tournament with a 7-0 victory over No. 15 Haddam-Killingworth. The Bears (16-0) will next meet ECC foe Montville in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Stonington at a time to be announced. Tucker Callahan, Brady O’Neil, Matthew Turrisi and Peter Schoenecker won singles matches for Stonington. Doubles teams earning wins were Chase Donnarummo-Sam Lund, Thomas Lyon-Sean Lord and Henry Sawin-Ben Mahoney. The Bears won all seven matches in straight sets.

    • Also in state tournament play Friday, No. 16 Fitch lost to No. 17 Simsbury 5-2 in the Class L qualifying round. Jonathan Law defeated Ledyard (5-2), Lyman Hall topped New London (7-0), Branford blanked Grasso Tech (7-0) and Hand defeated East Lyme (6-1) in Class M.

    Girls’ tennis

    • Anna Beauchene, Allie Kondash, Jess Hochdorfer and Kelly Chen earned a singles sweep for the No. 18-seeded Montville in a 6-1 victory over No. 15 Bolton in the qualifying round of the Class S state tournament. Chen won the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 for the Wolves (8-10), who will take on defending Class S champ Old Lyme in the first round at 10 a.m. Saturday. Angi Liu and Fiona Li won their No. 1 doubles match for the Wolves and Taisha Barbosa and Tenzin Akartsang won at No. 2.

    • Also in state tournament play Friday, 14th-seeded Ledyard defeated No. 19 Seymour 5-2 in the Class M qualifying round. No. 18 Avon edged No. 15 East Lyme 4-3 in the qualifying round in Class L.
