Noteworthy: This game features the top two teams in the WNBA standings and the top two teams in the Associated Press WNBA power poll, with the Sun and the Liberty each coming in at 17-4. The test for Connecticut, though, will to break a drought against New York, having lost their last five regular-season games to the Liberty, as well as the semifinal series between the two teams in the 2023 playoffs. The teams last met on June 8 at Mohegan Sun, with the Liberty winning 82-75. The Sun were led in that game by Bonner’s 16 points. Ionescu had 24 for New York. ... The Sun are coming off an 80-67 win Sunday against Atlanta and have won three straight. Bonner had 23 points on a career-best seven 3-point field goals to lead the way and Tiffany Mitchell notched a season-high 13 points in the victory. ... Last time out, the Liberty lost to the Indiana Fever 83-78 Saturday, a game in which Indiana’s Caitlin Clark posted the first career triple-double by a rookie in WNBA history. Ionescu scored 22 for the Liberty, who snapped a five-game winning streak. ... Something’s got to give: The Sun lead the WNBA, allowing just 72.8 points per game. The Liberty leads the league in 3-point field goals per game with 10.4 and stands second in points per game at 86.7. ... Sun guard Moriah Jefferson and the Liberty’s Breanna Stewart won four national championships together at UConn from 2012-16. ... Jefferson remains out with a right ankle injury. ... Following Wednesday’s game, Connecticut has just two more games on its schedule before a month-long Olympic break. The Sun play at home Sunday against Phoenix and Wednesday, July 16 at New York.
